I have several pair of super soft Ralph Lauren socks that look like this, all solid colors but have that same fuzz and very comfortable.

I tried to find them at Macy's - but I guess they are out of stock.

Reminds me back in Newport Beach where the style was to turn the cotton socks inside-out for that natural look. Hard to find again these days.

Prioritization, I just don't eat and I learned walking to work isn't a bad thing. When one cuts out fuel and food consumption the shoe collection grows. I may be skinny but no one notices because they are staring at my sweet chukka boots.

What color slacks/suits would everyone wear a walnut McAllister with? Of course not black.
Would you wear it with Navy? Grey? Dark grey?

Contemplating on which color to get... keep the walnut or change it to merlot. Then later, get a pair of Park Avenue in merlot if keeping McAllister in walnut.

AE's walnut color looks fantastic with medium grey or tan slacks. I also wear them with a pair of light brown slacks. Some like to wear walnut with navy slacks, but that's not my personal cup of tea.

g-banger: What type and color of polish do you use on your Strands? I'm digging the color - a bit darker but not by too much.

I understand what you are saying. I purchased my first Allen Edmonds almost 5 years ago. Since then i've gotten about 15 pair of AE, at least 10 Aldens, and 5 Carmina. Over half of my shoes are shell. I've probably gone overboard but that first purchase was justified by the idea that i'd be able to wear my Allen Edmonds for a long time. $350 every 10 years is better than $75 every year for shoes that will only last a season. With shoes you really do get what you pay for. I'll also say that if you can't afford them then don't get them. You can also snag some pretty decent deals on AE shoes from different places. If i'm not mistaken you can get the Lasalle right now for $129. This is a great way to get into a pair of Allen Edmonds without breaking the bank. There are people here who are wealthy but then there are people that are not. It really comes down to priorities. For a lot of us dressing in high quality shoes and clothes is a priority. For many it goes with our profession while for others they simply like looking sharp. My mom rolled her eyes wen she saw the price tag of a pair of AE (this was when they were $325). She couldn't believe that people paid that much for shoes. Her husband (not my father) regularly pays $100+ for Under Armor "officially licensed" college sports shirts. THose shirts last two years and he has to replace them. My shoes will foreseeably last 30 years. It's all in what you like.

Oh, and stay away from shell or your wife will flip.

I tried that too.
Used AE tube polish and conditioner, cleaner. Nothing more.

1. Cleaned
2. Applied conditioner and cleaner
3. Used an old t-shirt to clean
4. Used polish (premium tube from AE)
5. AE brush
6. Very little, if not nothing, water
7. Used the t-shirt again

This is all I could get (Right is the polished one, if you couldn't tell

). I guess you really need wax to get the mirror.

The polished shoe clearly looks better than the unpolished shoe. You did a fine job. There is no "guessing" that you need wax to get a mirror shine... you absolutely have to have wax to get a mirror shine.

If you feel like your results in the photo above are too dull, then by all means, give wax a shot. Good looking pair of PA's!

Some of the people posting here are undoubtedly wealthy, as their photos of massive AE shoe collections attest. For others (such as myself), AEs are luxury items worth cherishing and obsessing over--as evidenced by our willingness to write odes about them to perfect strangers on this forum. How do guys making $35K a year afford bass boats and Harleys? It's a matter or priorities--and thriftiness. I only own two pairs, but I saved a hundred dollars on each by purchasing a pair of (seemingly flawless) 2nds and the other pair during an anniversary sale. These shoes will probably last me for the rest of my life, whereas the Pikolinos that I paid $160 for at the Walking Company two years ago are already nearly worn out.

Merlot is the best all-around color you can buy, as it goes with everything but black, whereas the walnut probably should not be worn with charcoal, either. That said, the McAllisters in walnut are gorgeous. If you can add Park Avenues in merlot later, do that.

My black AE for Brooks Brothers Strands. I am in that minority who prefers the AE for Brooks Brothers versions as they have Poiron insoles and partial rubber soles. Unfortunately, they do not have full rubber heels as the AE shoes do, so I have the heels replaced with full rubber heels.

You like your Allen Edmonds seconds WICanic? That may be as close as I can come to a pair of Allen Edmonds. What do other people who own them think of them? I heard one person that had a pair of the seconds thought they were junk.
