I'll let you know in a week or two. I did a navy suede Grayson MTO last December and I hope they ship soon.

If they turn out well, I'm thinking of doing a snuff suede as well.

Thanks for the info everyone! Please update us when you receive your navy tassel, that sounds like a great makeup. I'll probably hold out on a purchase until I hear from you. I think a MTO would still be cheaper than a stock Alden, and the wait wouldn't be too bad--the weather hasn't really been cooperative so far this year, it's not like I'll be wearing them anytime soon.

What a terrific way to turn the chicken sh!t that was those "grey cloud" PAs (a serious AE misfire IMO) into some very tasty-looking chicken salad.  Have you ever used that spray-on stuff before?  How durable is it, how well does it take a polish, etc.?

An idiot cobbler here in Portland tried to spray a pair of my Lasalles with the Meltonian Nu-Life color spray when I paid him to dye them. The finish cracked within 5 feet of me heading out the door. Hopefully the spray used on those PAs is higher quality.

Can someone explain what's going on with the sides of these Strands?  These pictures are on the inside edge of each shoe at the ball.

It wasn't worth my time. I just had him strip them as best as he could, then dyed them myself using Fiebing's leather dye.

For those in Portland, AVOID Shoes On The Run.

those shoes were brand new. It's easier to dye brand new shoes as no wrinkle in leather. Dye cracks when leather is not prepared properly. So strip strip and then strip the existing dye first. The dye I have used is waproo is a leading shoe care brand here is Australia . They actually deals with shoe manufacturers. I am wearing mine today. The dye won't crack. It didn't look like it was re dyed. Rather looks like it was off the production line. I have too many walnut and tan and dark brown shoes(thanks AE). It's time to turn them into something more interesting (: . I have taken a complete photo series of how it was done will post them soon.

Can anyone recommend very formal allen edmonds with a similar profile as the Players? I wore mine for the first time and the shoe looks really sleek compared to the Strands.

So I picked up a pair of merlot Franciscans in the sale and they came with a strange pattern. I already made up my mind whether I'm going to keep them or not, but I want to see what yall think.

Hmm.  Part of me thinks they look fabulous, the other part of me thinks that the Franciscan in this color should be incredibly versatile (jeans through suit) but that the pattern and different finishes on each piece of leather disqualifies this shoe from the higher end of the spectrum.  I would probably send them back; you'll get a shoe about which you have no reservations, and you may also make someone who scores these as seconds very happy.

I 99% of the time wear dress shoes only at work and my weekends are casual so I wear my clarks. I haven't had to go to much formal events so I haven't had to wear dress shoes outside of work. And I for sure won't be wearing my strands to a bar.

So getting a little off topic here but you've touched on something I am curious about. I frequent the bar scene and sometimes wear my AE's and the next morning am very disappointed in my lack of judgement in shoe selection. I've gone back to wearing old sneakers. For those around here that hit the bars occasionally, what is the shoe of choice to look sharp but you won't care too much if they get dinged up a lot. I'm seriously taking a look at putting down a $20 investment in some crap eBay shoes or something... Suggestions?

The players is on the 2 last, which is one of AE's most narrow lasts. Any shoe on the 2 last would have a similar profile.

The players was discontinued so you won't see it on there. I believe some of the RL models made by AE are on the 2 last.

Personally, I'd send them back.
