As the Hampton is clearance priced, I'm now subject to unanticipated temptation. I'll probably resist it, however, as I think this style needs a proper shortwing.

I thought the Hamptons were discontinued so long ago as to be out of any consideration. I'd long wanted a black leather/white suede spectator in either that or in the McClain, just for something different than the few pairs of all leather Broadstreet spectators I have.

Many (if not most) regulars on this thread use JAB shoe trees, which are essentially the same as the AE and Nordstrom Rack trees. I use them and have no complaints.

The link NickCarraway provided to the Hamptons is still active, and they still have stock in many sizes. Allison could tell you if it's still in play for MTOs at that price.

oh boy, I already had to give her a follow-up call this week about the samples she sent me last week and the MTO from them ... I was already trying to limit myself to only 2 pairs this MTO round.

Speaking of the other wish style I mentioned: I've seen that the McClain is still actively made/sold ... but google images led me to its listing on Jos. A. Bank's website as a "Joseph A. Bank Exclusive." !!! Would anyone know if AE will MTO make a model that they currently do exclusive to another retailer?

whoops ... just did a quick search of this thread and found where a member MTO'd a McClain spectator last fall (outstanding bourbon/bone make up too!).
hmmm ... so now, if I did 4 pairs instead of 2, one Hampton and one McClain ... one black leather/white suede spectator ... but what about the other spectator? brown/white? burgundy/white? burgundy leather/navy suede?!? ... and let's see, how many meals could I skip to afford them all ...

Do I hit them with VSC and/or cordovan creme right away?  I know..."take 'em out the box, put them on, enjoy...",  but I read somewhere that you can remove some of the AE 'goo' from the shoe to get more color to come through, but can't find the post.  I don't wanna search the threads for info! Since I never had cordovan, I've been skimming over those posts in favor of more relevant ones.

...I just got my two favorite shoes (and I would have neither without this sale).  I now see why shell is so loved here.  I don't even care about the difference in size of the punched holes on the medallion.  If you have some, members, please share your experience about where to go from here...

Nice score!  One of the first things I do upon receiving AE shell is to work to get all the excess polish off and get down to the beauty of the shell.  I tend to rotate between Renovateur, wiping down with a damp cloth and brushing to eventually get there.  Some try Renomat when there is excessive polish.  I've not used VSC before, so no clue how it would work in this process.

I wouldn't totally give up on your MTO's! Why not keep trying and also go for a pair of White's? My next boot will be a Limmer which I've wanted for many years.

Very nice and congrats! I wouldn't get too carried away with stripping them down yet because they are your first pair and you don't want to go too far with it. NewShoes1 hit it pretty solid I would just start with some Renovatour and the Mac method. Shell takes time and some work to really pop, at least AE shell does IME. But it has always been worth it. I use a small amount of Reno and microfiber cloth switching spots on the cloth as the cream comes up. When done wipe with a damp rag and brush for 10 minutes or so. Let them sit for a bit or better yet wear them to warm them up and wipe with damp cloth and brush again. And repeat but you can't do it all in one sitting it just doesn't work that way for some reason.

Allison's been communicating with me. Would you like me to ask her to check in on your e-mail for you? Send me a PM if you want me to help. I'd love to help a fellow member out.

Are you near a Brooks Brothers?  Their AEs are same model name and same last as AE's own.  The only difference at BB is the sole.

Thanks for that tip, I honestly didn't believe we had a Brooks Brothers anywhere nearby but after some googling found there's one in a run down mall in the area that's been on the verge of closing for years.  Only a 3 minute drive from my tailor, go figure!

I would remind you that in addition to the sole, the BB versions have the Poron insole as well.  Some like it, some don't.  It is nearly universally accepted that it makes the shoes fit a bit tighter than just the traditional leather insole does.

Limmers are real nice. I grabbed a pair of Danners recently which I have been pleased with. I sent Allison another email to try and give it another shot

The northeast today requires some specialty attire.

Epaulet Olive Tree Herringbone UK Tweed and Long Branches.

Very nice!  The color looks in between the waxy leather and the dark brown grain.  Which ones are these and what treatment did you apply?

Thanks

Brown Waxy Leather.

I used Obenauf's HDLP about 5 or 6 wears ago.

It darkened them up a little.

I just brush them in between, more so to keep the salt and mud cleaned off.

They are due for another shot of HDLP again soon.

The pic below is immediately after I did it the last time.
