Looking for advice.

Currently have Daltons and Hamptons (511 last) in 11d and now considering Franciscan Monk Straps on (333 last).

Do I go down or up in size?

Thanks!

I'm just curious, but could I do a McTavish (which is on clearance) MTO with a calf leather upper from a Mcallister/Strand? For instance, a McTavish MTO with merlot calf leather?

Seems like it'd be cheating, as I'd be getting what is essentially a Mcallister shoe at a McTavish clearance price.

I believe the shoes typically go on clearance because AE had uppers sitting on the shelves. I don't think changing the color would be an option with a clearance price.

Are clearance shoes first quality or is it a mix?

I believe they are firsts because AE doesn't sell seconds from the website.

Thank you very much for the useful advice. I size a 9D in the standard calf leather Daltons with dress socks but went for 9E in the Cordovan Bayfields to accommodate the poron insole option and so that I could have more space to wear thick wool socks.

I am still puzzled as to if the Promontory Point makeup in the picture is based on the Wolverine last or the 8 (678) last. Any ideas?

Thank you very much for giving a heads up about my error Rydenfan. I believe the one on the left is the Bayfield. I will post a better picture comparison to pre-empt anyone giving me erroneous advice.

As anrobit indicated, this is the same boot.  I wished I had been able to grab a pair when they were still made on the Wolverine last, which fits me better.  I suppose the "russet" color that's available for the 1Ks is also proprietary.  It's a shame, because AE currently has no colors to compete with Wolverine's russet (despite making the damn boot) or Red Wing's "cigar."

I have both in shell in an 11E.  The Leeds is roomier (partly because it's a blucher) and would accommodate a casual sock; the PA fits like a leather glove over my dress socks.

I was dead set on the Bayfield until I saw pics of the Promontory Point in Cordovan which blew me away. I paid the standard price for a pair of Cordovan boots as the custom fee was waived, less a 15% discount as part of the Rediscover America Sale (order placed on 21st October 2013).

Repost due to wrong photo in previous post

Dear Sirs,

So Allison said that my MTO Brown Cordovan Bayfields didn't make the final cut and I'm considering to change it to an MTO Brown Cordovan Promontory Point instead.

What do you think of this change?

Can anyone comment on the sizing difference between the 1 (511) last, which the Bayfield is on, and the 8 (678) last which the Promontory point is on?

My search for other shoes on the 678 last only yielded orthotics models thus far.

Only the crinkle model is clearance, all of the other McTavishs are still regular price.

Congratulations on "senior member" status.

I am almost certain it's on the 8 (678) last, as the toe is far more tapered than the Wolverine last (which I think was used to make the boots that are still featured on the AE website).  From my own asking around and reading reviews, it seems that the 678 is a bit tight in the forefoot compared to other lasts, but removing the insole produces a relatively roomy fit for the size.

For those of you considering the Long Branches, I wanted to recommend them and share a couple of quick pics.

use these boots for almost anything but the worst snow. They clean up beautifully. Below are two shots so you can see how much wear they get and how they clean up

I hope they aren't taking their standard brown models and calling them chocolate… that would do too much to my psyche.
