Thanks.  I was actually jonesing for a Wolverine 1K Krause a bit back, and I'm really excited by the knowledge that I can put in an MTO on the Promontory Point.
I'll call Allison tomorrow.  Tonight, however, I need some help regarding size and makeup.

Sizing: the AE reviews all complain about the boot being small and narrow, but AE's (and RandomAdam's) description of the last make it sound roomy.  What gives?  I'm an 11E in most lasts (can't wear the skinnies--222 and 333) but want to wear a light-to-midweight boot sock with these.  Per an earlier post of mine, I have sent or will soon send back Long Branches in 10.5EEE, 11E, and 11.5 D because none can accommodate the sock comfortably.  (The 11E fits best and would be perfect with a dress sock).  It doesn't appear that they make this last in a EE.  Any advice?

Makeup: I like yours, NWTeal, but will pass on the suede back.  What Chromexcel colors were available, and was there an up charge?  I'd like a burgundy or chili (if possible) and a mini-lug sole.  I'm up for recommendations on welting, stitching, etc.

Thanks!

I went with the golden brown chromexcel actually without the suede back. I did go for the snuff suede tongue however.

It all depends on how you want to wear it. I wanted a more all weather boot so I went with the CXL, split welt and dainite sole. It'll probably be a cool boot in natural CXL, too.

On sizing;
The Promontory Point comes with an insert. With the insert they fit snug. Without, they are comfortably roomy. I wear 9.5 D in most AE lasts and they are all a little tight in the toe box. The Promontory point, in 9.5 D and without the insert, fits better than any AE shoe I own. Plenty of room without feeling sloppy.

Great looking shoes!

Oh and for sizing. Sales rep told me that it only comes in D widths but I haven't verified. The boot fits a little tight with the insole, but it's removable. FWIW, I have Daltons in 9D and that was a good fit in the Promontory point. I wear a 8.5e in the 5 last.

I'd love that promontory point more as a plain toe boot... Is it possible to remove the cap toe?

My other clearance MTO option is the Shaker Heights, which is on a last that (if the description is accurate) should fit my foot perfectly.

The problem is, the only thing I would change would be the sole (Toby mini-lug in place of the combo tap sole).  The tweed is not terribly practical for salty, slushy sidewalks, but the boot looks too nice to mess around with otherwise.

Since a second is available in my size for $199, I wonder if its worth $279 to have one MTO with the lug sole.  Thoughts?

(Thanks, BTW, for those offered thus for.  My OCD episode will soon pass).

I think the extra $80 is so worth it to get a pair made to your one of a kind specification, plus you don't have to deal with the hit-or-miss potential issue with the seconds.  The con to that is the duration of the MTO.

I am definitely with you, I would prefer to spend a little bit more to buy something that I will love. I will also add that it is kind of cool to have something unique.

Bah me again on a sizing question.. How to size on the MacNeil's? I'm 8.5D in Strand (almost fully closed laces) with good fit (not heel slip, etc.) and 8D in Kenilworth (nice lace width) with good fit.

I think I read go down 1/2 size from 5 last.. so was thinking 8D in MacNeil? And is shell any different?

And I don't recall where it was answered where I saw last, but what is the fit on Long Branch.. I see a pair I'm eyeing closely..

As Mdubs and Cold Iron mentioned a few pages ago, it's usually unnecessary to change sizes for shell vs calf. The fit might be slightly different, but I'll add my voice to the many who has plenty who keeps consistent sizing.

The 5 Last is generally the most narrow that AE offers. With the 5, some people go down a (1/2) size and up a width. Simply going down a size might make the shoes too narrow. It's actually interesting that you sized down for the Kenilworth as compared to the Strands as they're both on the 5 aren't they? I tend to just go up a width when buying shoes on the 5 last. So I usually wear a 8.5E, I go 8.5EE. Of course, everyone's feet are different. It's also worth mentioning that most AE SA's will suggest going TTS regardless of last.

After all that it seems I didn't really answer your question! ..... but yeah, from what you've posted, I'd give 8D a shot.

Specs:

Eagle County MTO

2066 Walnut Calf

Brass Eyelets, 3 Speed Hooks

Dark Brown Contrast Stitching

Independence Lining and Insole

Black Split Reverse Welt

Toby Mini Lug

Brown Transparent Edge Dressing

I placed the order mid December and they arrived today.  And all for $197.  I'll be waiting to see everyone else's.

I ordered mine Nov 26, they failed inspection. I was the first to get confirmation from Allison we could get the clearance/discount pricing on the MTO. I got the sale price on a MTO shell during the RDA sale, and am glad I asked about clearance items. I can't wait to see everyones creation that ordered the Eagle County. After seeing yours, I am so happy I ordered a pair. Amazing looking boot. Congrats!

Did I miss something here? When did standard calf shoes go up to $365? A year ago they were $335, then $345, now $365... Shell has jumped from $595 to $650.

I believe it was a few months back. Was mentioned here for a little while but nothing too extreme.
