I have been holding off on some burgundy shell Graysons in my size that've been on the seconds list since at least September 2011. I just may have to make that happen. biggrin.gif Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks - that makes me feel better.  And really, I am and I will.  It was just an eye-opener to me this morning to realize how much keener my eye has become (for better or worse).

Strand, brown shell.  Was very excited to pick these up last fall - seconds, minus 15%.  However, had I known then what I know now, I would have sent them back.  One look at the left shoe should tell you why.  I still wear them - they fit great and are of course brown shell Strands - but am self-conscious (needlessly, but still) about doing so.

Anybody mind confirming to us newcomers what the defect is?

The wrinkled shell on the right side of the lacing on his left foot.

calm down buddy... do we need to have an intervention?

It's sort of ironic you are posting this right after posting your cautionary tale regarding shell seconds.

either your ordering 18 pairs of shoe trees was a sign of good things to come...

...or a seriously bad omen...

get out while you still have your dignity! This forum will consume your life, your money, and your relationship with your S.O. (unless your significant other is a shoe junky like my wife).

Took me a third hard look. First I thought they looked fine. Second I thought it was the rolls on the right side of the left lacing. I knew that couldn't be it. On my third look I realized it eas the off centered lace/tongue on the shoe. I honestly had to look carefully and I think only you and someone examining would notice. I'm pretty sure my shell MTO strands on the left shoe are slightly crooked as well but I'm okay with it (although I agree that if I had noticed earlier I probably would have sent them back).

On second thought...is that the defect or is it the angle of your leg? Well I guess that just speaks to how tolerable the defect might be.

Also, nice socks. I have the same pair. :slayer:

unless I'm mistaken, that is not the defect. It was identified above your post as the roll on his left shoe to the right of the lacing.

Haha yeah, I ended up second guessing myself but I must have posted my second thought just before you posted this reply. I wonder if that "roll" can be identified before wear. If it developed after he wore them a few times, I don't know if AE would have known upon initial QC inspection.

Thanks. Here's the tale:

That's awesome. I'm hesitant to share my Brogue Suede Strand story as I'm almost embarrassed at the deal I got. But what the hell...

When the Banff slippers were closeouts for $59, I bought 4 different sizes on the recommendation of an AE services representative. Sadly, the only size that worked for me was also clearly seconds quality. I sold one size to OptoDoc and returned the rest, hoping that they could remake that one pair.

However, it had been long enough that they were out of the materials and could not make another pair. What they offered instead was any pair of shoes up to $175! They were kind enough to let me put that toward the closeout Brogue Suede Strand which was on sale for $245. They were out of my size, but were happy to put in a special order. I was also able to put use a $35 recrafting card I got when they fixed the broken tab on my burgundy shell Daltons for free. And finally, I found that they refunded me the original $59 for the Banff slippers. So all I paid was 245-175-35+tax, or $39.38, for a made-to-size shoe that would've cost me almost 10 times that ($373.46) at full price.

Needless to say, I'm very thankful for how it worked out. And because I got so lucky, I am trying to be very patient...

Turns out I didn't have to be all that patient. :)
