Perfect! Doesnt look like they are exposed too much, not much more than the standard tap sole they use.

Thanks for the images.

Those are boss as hell.

Yeah. Those are super sweet boots. Black Shell is very under rated.

Those black Daltons are great!

My first MTOs arrived this morning. Black suede Rutledges, my first pair of shoes on the 333 last. Glad I ordered down a half size and up one width, as they're a little longer and narrower in the toe than I had expected.

Great Dalton MTO!

I've thought about a brown shell MTO Dalton, but have also been eyeing the C&J Islay lately after Patrick B's recent pictures.  Maybe a brown pebble grain Dalton MTO with a danite or mini lug sole?

Those are great too! I love black suede. Very underrated too, I think. I toyed with the idea of a black suede shelton a while back. May revisit that idea after seeing these!

Tan ink > Natural > Light brown transparent/Toasted > Brown transparent > Black

Did I miss anything? Is there any color between brown transparent and black?

Also, is the chili welt lighter or darker than the brown welt?

Thanks!

I would guess the chili welt is a little lighter, and obviously more red.

The edge dressings you mentioned are the only ones I have confirmed from Allison. I have them listed below with links to examples. I feel like there might be a non-transparent brown edge, but I'm not positive. Anyone else know?

Please let me know if there are any additions or corrections and I'll update as necessary. I know at the very least that I wasn't able to find all the edge dressing options someone figured out before.

Leather: any leather (calf/cowhide/Chromexcel/shell) in stock
Extra burnishing? optional
Stitching: tone-on-tone, contrast, practically any thread color (khaki, etc.)

Binding (topline piping / slip beading): certain color, none
Lining: unlined, standard, Independence lambskin, more?
Insole: standard, Independence, Poron, orthotic(?), more?
Welt type: flat, split reverse, more?
Wheeled edge (fudging)? optional on flat welts
Welt color: ("soft?") natural, chili, brown, black, "brown with reverse smokey stitch", more?
Edge dressing: ("natural?") tannatural toasted, light brown transparentbrown transparent, black, more?

Eyelets: blind, brass agatine, copper agatine, matched agatine (is this available?), more?
Speed hooks? optional on boots
Pull tab? optional on boots? Allison said can't always be removed if part of the pattern.
Sole: anything found here: http://issuu.com/allenedmonds/docs/ae_spring_digest_web_lr/46

Of course. There's a whiff of "too good to be true" here so I'm trying not to get too excited.  When I have some time I'll comb the old catalogs to see if this boot shows up anywhere therein.

OK, these vintage Andover boots have arrived.  I'm blown away by them.  Here are pics:

They don't appear to have ever been worn.  Only the faintest of creases - I'll have to break them in fresh.  Original insoles and outsoles.  Minuscule nicks on the polished cobbler.  They smell a tiny bit musty but it's barely noticeable.

I called AE and was told these boots were crafted on a defunct last known as the 796.  Anybody know anything about this last who would care to share?  I was also told that the last time a pair of these came in for recrafting was in 2008.

At 10.5 D, they are an excellent fit (I'm normally 9.5 E on the 5 last).

Judgment:  quite possibly the find of a lifetime.  Happy New Year to me!

Beautiful.  Has anyone ever tried to pair black suede captoes with formal wear?  If any shoes could work, it might be these.

I was thinking along the same lines. It's as though they were made to go with a smoking jacket or Black Watch trousers, or dressed down with dark jeans.

I don't quite understand where this sort of black suede shoe would be most appropriately used but I like them a lot.

Ever since I saw the photo on A Suitable Wardrobe of Cary Grant wearing a pair of black suede captoes with a gray suit, I've wanted a pair. I think they'll look good with a medium to dark gray suit.
