Here they are next to the stock pair that came with my Dalton, I swear I am never going back to the stock pair again.

Having recently acquired some Daltons, the flat laces push them into casual land, IMHO.

Anyway, going with the shell macneils today:

It's really too bad they don't carry a dark brown, but I ordered both black and brown and can't wait to give them a go.

That's fantastic!

It's too bad they don't make a darker brown, but if you want to see how the regular brown will look next to some bourbons, here is a picture. I'm sorry I didn't lace them up, but they're boot laces, and I was just throwing them in there for a color reference. I think they're a little light, but they might work on a boot.

Thanks!

I might need to stick with the black for the Daltons when they come because I think you are right about them being too light.

Considering the amount of black burnishing on the bourbon finish, I think black laces could look quite good. Good luck, and I'll wait for pictures.

Agreed.

I don't know why they don't do an all rubber heel on replacement.  Maybe they don't stock/order those dovetail heel pieces?
Cobblers should be able to do an all rubber heel replacement if you ask them to. I personally prefer the leather/rubber combo. I'm not sure why they can't just replace just the dovetail piece. Maybe it has to do with a new piece being higher than the rest of the heel or maybe it's just easier and they reap more profit from just replacing the whole heel.

That's a defect IMO. I had the whole heel of my Quintons fall off after about a year of wear. I sent them back to AE and they recrafted the whole shoe because the sole was splitting from the welt too. All free of charge.

Agreed. This is why their bourbon shoes (Strands, at least) have black edge dressing.

To me, the stock laces look like spaghetti, while the flat laces look like linguini.  Or maybe I'm just hungry right now.

I agree that the flat laces make the Dalton more casual and for me that is a good thing as I love wearing mine with jeans!

^^ They look much better with the flat laces, IMO. Well done.

Just put my second MTO order in: brown Shaker Heights with extra toe burnishing and dainite sole. No other alterations. Love that boot, especially now at 100 off. Thanks Allison!

In other news, is AE no longer offering free 2 day delivery standard on shoe orders? Just received a promo email about free 2-day delivery "for a limited time."

All kidding aside, to me putting flat laces on Daltons brings the following issue into stark relief:  that sadly AE doesn't stock a true work boot (one that would compete with the Red Wing GT, Wolverine 1000 Mile, Chippewa Service/Homestead, etc.).  The Bayfield, Long Branch, Eagle County, and Portland all dance around it, but you have to go the custom route to get something that really approaches what I would consider to be a work boot - cap- or round-toe, no perfing or brogueing, lug sole, and the like.  (The Promontory Point might come closest, but with the Dainite sole and no speed hooks, it's still not quite rugged enough for me, and AE doesn't seem to be positioning it as an alternative to the ones I mentioned above.)  Flat laces on work boots are definitely the way to go, but IMO on a Dalton it looks like you're trying to turn them into something they're really not.

Just my $.02.
