Eagle County fits me very well in an 8D which is the same as my number 5 last size in my McAllisters. I also got my Dalton in an 8D and I should have opted for maybe an 8E or 8.5D as they are a little narrow and I have been wearing double socks in hopes to stretch them out slightly.

I measure between an 8 and 8.5 on the brannock

Damn, I just bought a pair of the Eagle County tan seconds for $129, and while it's a great boot, I realized that the tan leather is too light in color for what I wanted.  And now that I see there's a MTO option, I'd love to have a pair in bourbon, possibly with a normal double leather or butyl outsole (or mini lug even) rather than the wedge sole.

Maybe I'll have to bite the bullet and return these seconds and jump on the MTO for ~$70 more.  How long is this Eagle County MTO deal going on for?

I assume as long as they are on the website for $197 they MTO option would be available at that price.

Here is the pic of my tan pair, treated with one coat of LP

Actually, RL seconds are usually $259, though both Ralph Lauren and Brooks Brothers seconds are often discounted to $149.

Anyone know how much extra they charge for chromexcel or shell on a MTO?

Allison made it sound like Chromexcel was not an extra charge, but shell cordovan absolutely would be. You'll have to ask her how much. Keep in mind she's out-of-office until Monday. Let us know what you hear.

Will do. Chromexcel is definitely less of a dressy option, right? I'm probably going to just stick to regular calf. I thought I wanted Bourbon, but I'm really not a big fan after seeing it in person on Daltons. Still conflicted over what sole to go with. Trying to create a shoe I can dress up as well as down.

I just received receipt of my Black Friday order. Noticed shipping charges were not included in the receipt. Shipping is $35-$45 or so to Canada. Do they usually bill the shipping charges separately or is this an oversight and I should call them back to let them know?

Chromexcel is definitely more casual and rugged.

I'm going to go with brown Chromexcel so I have a pair of casual and/or rainy day boots compared to my burgundy shell Daltons. My biggest open question is which outsole to use, as I'm quite honestly overwhelmed with all of these options. I'm considering some of the following:

  1. Double butyl sole: Arguably the best non-rubber option for rugged boots?
  2. Double JR sole: For no extra charge I could get these higher quality oak soles, though they're likely not as good with water as butyl?
  3. Combination soles:
    1. V-Tread: Standard topy-looking sole for dressier shoes?
    2. Mini-lug: Popular option for rougher boots?
    3. Tempest: No clue.
  4. A ton of other rubber soles:
    1. Vibram Mini-Lug: Why this over Toby?
    2. Vibram Lug: Arguably most rugged.
    3. Toby Mini-Lug: Why this over Vibram?
    4. Titan: Why this over Dainite?
    5. Dainite: Why this over Titan?
    6. Maxim-Lite Polyurethane
    7. Claire
    8. Executive
    9. VIP
    10. Othello
    11. Hamlet
    12. Italian
    13. Blues

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I've only been keeping up with them since the summer, but I've never seen them at more than $149. Maybe it's like JAB's suits "usually" being $1,000.

I'm in the same boat. I was initially thinking Dainite all the way, but now I'm not so sure, especially because I'm not sure how a black sole would look with chili or cognac.

Dainite lasts a long time, so that's one reason why I like it.

Does anyone know why Bourbon seems to look radically different on different shoes? Or is it just photography?

e.g.,

Bourbon looks nothing like that in person.

Ok, I just had to brag about my AE experience today. Had never been able to buy such an expensive pair of shoes, however, I decided to take the plunge and look at them as an investment.

Decided on a pair of Long Branch boots in dark brown, and made the 3 hour drive to the closest AE store. I have weird feet (born with a SEVERE case of club foot), so I wanted to have some help from one of their associates regarding getting measured and picking their brain about proper sizing, shoe care, etc.

The lady who helped me was great, but she gave me some bad news right away, the dark brown were out of stock. However, she encouraged me to try the Long Branch in brown, and she sized me right up. The size she brought out were spot on and felt really good! I was very excited, but then she proceeded to tell me the Long Branch were on sale for $99 icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif At this point I turned around and knocked over a stack of shoe boxes with my erection. So, after I regained my composure, I did the natural thing and found myself a pair of Aberdeens on sale for $149! Ended up with two pair for $50 less than what I was prepared to pay for one!

I just could not believe my luck, and I figured you fine folks that care enough to post on this site would be the only people I know who would give a damn, so thanks for indulging me!

What store has Long Branch for $99?

Yeah, I thought It was a heck of a deal. I bought the above mentioned shoes, a box of replacement laces, two additional pair of laces, a bottle of leather lotion (I think that is what it was called), and a cedar shoe tree for $310.
