My new MacNeils are breaking in very nicely. They get more comfortable with every wearing. Excellent.

I keep looking at that Cambridge/McAllister predecessor, the Broadstreet, on p. 40 of the 1965 AE catalogue: http://issuu.com/allenedmonds/docs/1965-catalog

I think it can't be the same last as the 5 last, which the Cambridge and McAllister are on. The forefoot of the Broadstreet's last looks seriously narrow, narrower than the 5 last. Men with large pinky or ring toes could not wear that shoe.

Wouldn't it be great to get our hands on the 1965 Alden catalogue and the 1965 Johnston & Murphy catalogue and compare? I'll bet we'd find that AE and J&M's beat Alden on bolder shoes with decoration: wingtips and the like. Alden would probably have been better in sober city shoes.

As for all the sharkskin shoes in the 1965 AE catalogue: that vintage shoes website in Germany has some AE sharkskins for sale:
http://www.classicshoesformen.com/manufacturers/allen-edmonds
Check out the sharkskin spectator longwing blucher!

(Doesn't look much like sharkskin suiting fabric, does it?)

I'm liking that 1965 catalog too - especially the high street and the 7 eyelet version of the 5th avenue. the Breton looks nice (English style wingtip - I've only seen a similar style in Church's Grafton lately) Also liking the brentwood on page 33.

How much space should an AE shoe have length wise? My foot isnt really slipping but there is some room. Is this fine or should it be a snug fit?

It depends on your foot and the last. Some shoes have room in front of your toe, some have little. If its not slipping and seems to fit width-wise at the ball of your foot, it sounds about right.

Does AE have a habit of bringing back old styles? Aside from the timeless classics, which if I recall were only gone for a few years anyway...

+1, the Breton looks nice. Don't see that much these days.

I'm not a fan of 7-eyelets, but it definitely improves the 5th Ave's looks over the current 6-eyelet version. AE almost aways puts the toe cap too far forward for my taste, except on the Strand and the Clifton, and the discontinued Evanston and Soho, where they got it right. But the 7 eyelets makes the quarters longer and so the vamp has to be shorter. Hence the short cap doesn't look as stubby as on the current 6-eyelet 5th Ave. It's more in proportion to the shorter vamp that the 7-eyelets quarters necessitate.

I like the High Street: sort of a city version of the Strand, with delicate brogueing and pinking. I would love it if they brought back the High Street, the old 5th Ave, this Chester, the Austin, and the MacGregor. I would buy the Chester and the Austin, no question. The Austin looks to me like the perfect style for a black wingtip.

PSA: Land's End has 40% off everything on the website. As usual, they removed all Allen Edmonds shoes. However, if you had AE shoes in your cart, you can purchase them at 40% off using the code.

I am currently debating over a dark brown Strand ($195) and a suede Katmai ($149).

Both are size 10.5 D. Anyone want them? Please PM me quickly.

This is my inaugural SF post, hi :). I had a question about the consistency of Allen Edmonds. I recently received a pair of Allen Edmonds Fifth Ave. Black factory seconds from their 2 for $300 sale. It looks like the left shoe has a crooked brogue (I think that's what it's called, please correct me if I'm wrong). It slants upwards as you go from the inside out. Is this typical/expected?

Thanks!

What do you guys think about black Delrey's for a formal NYE event? I have strands and park aves in walnut and burgundy, but don't think either will be suitable for a slim, charcoal suit. I need a black shoe, but feel a cap toe will be too business-like. I would definitely prefer a sleeker, more fasion-fwd shoe, and I'm thinking that the Delrey may fit that bill.

I've worn my black LaSalles to formal events, and for similar reasons, and I think they were perfect. Being that they are a very similar shoe (split toe blucher) I think there is no problem wearing the Delrays-I really like the sleek look on the shoe. But there are those who may disagree and say captoe or bust.

i would wear the burgundy PA with a charcoal suit for a formal NYE event. given the assumption that 90% of men in that event probably will wear black shoes, unless the event is a fashion event, then that's another story.

It is actually a fashion/entertainment industry event, so I assume that I would have some license to step outside of traditional rules.
