Anyone have other ideas on what you might change? I would primarily use these in non-work situations although on the really crummy New England winter days I would probably wear them to work with a business casual outfit.

I was Googling and something caught my eye. When you guys talk about the welt color versus the sole edge, is this what you're talking about? I like the natural color on top and the brown on the edge. How do you think this would look on a pair of brown CXL Bayfield? Since the boot below is brown CXL I imagine it would look just like that. smile.gif  I think I also like those flat laces.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Edit: With flat laces - http://selvedgeforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=3417.0

Edit (again): One more question... I'm an 8E on the 1 last. Do you all wear the same in this boot considering the Poron insole?

I ordered standard makeup Bayfields MTO so I could get a 10.5 left and 10 right. They arrived with round laces but one boot was missing the midsole. When they returned from AE with the midsole installed they both had flat laces. I don't like how the flat laces twist and fold through the hooks so AE sent me the round ones and now I have both although for now I'm using the round ones. Loving the boots and break in has been pretty painless due to the soft cxl.

They should have plenty of brown shell. I would personally return them.

Looking closer at the picture...I'm not sure. That isn't horrible, but not something I would expect on a first quality shoe. I would keep them for a seconds quality price, tho.

Thanks for your opinions. That more or less confirms what my feelings are, that these should have been considered seconds. I'll be contacting AE customer service to sort it out. I'm most likely going to ask for exchange for another pair of firsts, as I don't really feel like getting these in second quality.

Now here are some pics of them today, compared to my new Brown Shell Jeffersons. You can see that the Brown Shell Strand has lightened up over the past 4-5 months. Some of this is due to a lot of brushing, but some may be due to exposure to the sunlight. They certainly do appear different in natural light than in indoor light.

Now here Are my Brown Shell Strand, Brown Shell Jefferson and Brown Shell Patriot, to give a comparison. All 3 should be the same color of Shell Cordovan, yet you can see a difference in all 3. On the shelf below you can see my Walnut Shell Macniels (2 pair) and my Black Shell Macneils.

I can't promise that all Brown Shell Cordovan will evolve this way. I hope this helps.

Thanks for taking the time to do the compare.  I am bummed that there is no more cappuccino.  But with how your Strand has evolved, it looks like the brown mellows down.  They look great.  So definitely a good option.

Awesome!  Nice choices.  I love the sole edge.

Dundee owners, do you guys prefer Poron or the traditional leather insole?

I have read a few weeks ago somebody explaining the structural difference between Poron and the traditional leather insole.  I think it was MWS.  I can't remember the complete technical explanation, but I think he was saying that due to the fiberboard material in Poron, the traditional leather sole is better in the long run.  If you do a search on Poron on this thread, I'm sure it will come out.

Terrific shoes! I acted a bit too slow and didn't get them in cappuccino in time (should have ordered both the Leeds at the same time with my McNails). I opted for the black CXL on the Dainite sole instead.

(I brought my shoes when they were new to several cobblers and asked for an initial protective layer of polish/wax as recommended by members here, yet they all looked at me like I was crazy and said that AE shoes are so good that they "self-maintain.")

Everyone starts as a noob.  The only thing I would add vs. the advise you already got is if you're really interested in learning how to care for your shoes, read/participate in this thread: http://www.styleforum.net/t/228153/the-official-shoe-care-thread-tutorials-photos-etc.

Thanks a lot. I agree. I'm glad I moved on what I did. Have the Dundee and Leeds and my MacNiels should be done in a couple weeks.

I just placed my MTO order with Allison.

She is a pleasure to work with.

I think she needs a raise.

This group has been running her ragged the past few weeks.

In any case..8 weeks until the unlined black shell Daltons with minilug soles.

Cant wait.
