I do have the same stamp on one of my shoes and I talked to the AE Customer Assistance just earlier today about this. I sent them just earlier this week to be refinished and indicated that I'd be happy to cover the expenses out of pocket, since the shoes has no warranty. This stamp--according to AE--means that the shoe has been previously worn. They said they don't use W any longer. Interestingly, mine have been acquired brand new through Nordstrom Rack, so I am confused.

Doc, you asked for pics of my seconds suede Strands when they arrived:

AppleMark

AppleMark

AppleMark

Next to my Snuff Suede Neumoks with bright orange laces and my Walnut Strands for comparison purposes.  A few things:  First, these shoes are extremely comfortable, including the Dainite sole (which is my first).  Second, they do feel different than my Amoks or Neumoks since they are lined.  Finally, the vamp doesn't close nearly as much as my other five-lasted shoes (both lined and unlined) but I don't really care.  I have a relatively high instep so getting it closed doesn't really matter to me.  When I go even wider in sizes the heel and forefoot don't fit properly and cause back pain.  Extremely happy with these shoes at $229!  Huge shout out to the guys at the Brookfield, Wisconsin Shoe Bank!

New arrivals:

m9jf6CL.jpgThis last really works for me.  Had to size down .5 from my TTS ( a little long).  I think they are discontinuing these which is a shame since it is a great shoe.

Yes, chocolate larchmont was in clearance a few weeks back.

Very nice pickup!

How would the Larchmont fit compared to the Rutledge? Similar length, but with a little more volume since it's a derby vs oxford? They are on the same last after all I think...

They look pretty good otherwise. I would keep them if that's the only issue.

Do you think I'm being too picky? I am reading posts of members receiving seconds with slight scuffs and I wish I received mine with scuffs and creases rather than that excess material which is hard to miss once it is pointed out.

Hey guys, long time lurker first time poster.

I have bought many shoe trees medium sized from AE and originally I wore size 8.5E. For the five last I wear size 8.5D but the sizing guide found online for the shoe trees express a small size for those shoes.

Would it be okay for me to use my medium sized shoe trees on those 8.5D shoes?

I'm confident that if most members in this thread received the seconds Patriots I received awhile back, they would have returned them. way worse off than the defect you encountered in your particular shoe.

I kept mine, basically as the price was right, only I would ever pick up on the defect, and I saw it as a cheaper means to get into a loafer that I was nonetheless hesitant about delving into for fear of sizing issues

Early birthday present from my parents. I really never liked any sort of spectator before, but I am really impressed by these shoes.

probably not. you may end up stretch out your shoes too much

I just ordered a pair of bourbon mcallisters and walnut strands. Expanding my colors a little and figured those would be diverse enough. Is there a color belt that would semi match for both? Or if I were to get just one color would it be better to be on the lighter side towards walnut or darker towards the bourbon?

I don't think you're being too picky. I would also be disappointed. My shell Leeds arrived today and (thankfully) had only a minor scuff on one toe, so I am 3 for 3 on seconds. If you don't feel right about them now, you probably never will. Do they, perchance, have another pair in your size?

these are the brown shell patriots I received, as seconds, awhile back. the crease/buildup of leather on the inside of the right shoe might have been a deal killer for most. but for me, at the price paid, and the fact I never delved into loafers, it was an easy way to get help get my sizing right. I wore the f@#$ out of them this past summer, yardwork and all, and no one ever commented on the defect.

this allows me to comfortable buy another pair in another color, either first or seconds, and feel comfortable they'll fit appropriately.

Promontory Point boots are in! Overall they're pretty good. I wish they'd kept the leather outsole from the pre-production model, but oh well. For anyone who thought they'd look like the Wolverine 1000 Miles... not so much. They narrow much more to a point in the toe, so overall a bit dressier than 1k's. They come with poron insole AND another removable insole. Poor detailing on the bottom of the shoe where the stitching goes through the Danite grip pads. The pictures on the AE website are pretty misleading.... there's no leather outsole and the toe appears much more bulbous on the website than it is in real life. These fit TTS like most all of my AE shoes. Here are pics:

Thanks for sharing.

They may not look just like the 1K boots, but they certainly look quite a bit like them. I for one like that they come on the Dainite sole. Surprised as I didn't think any shoemaker in the US used the Dainite sole.
