I'd send his a PM and ask. What I meant to say was he would lower the VALUE so you don't get hit by customs. icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

@BCer -- my wife loved her Born boots (similar to these) for the whole year they managed to last.  Then the rubber sole gave out and the horrible non-replacable insole/arch support system disintegrated.   Besides Frye, what companies produce repairable/recraftable women's boots with quality similar to Allen Edmonds and at a price like what we'd find at AE's outlets or sales?

So, after letting everyone else get a crack at 'em, I decided to give in and check what shells were left in stock at $299... unfortunately there was a pair of #8 MacNeils left in my size (9.5 EEE) which means I had to buy them. I never did get myself a pair of #8 LWS, and the only thing that had held me back from the MacNeils before was the black edging/welt.... at this price, I may sand it off and put on a natural or antique edging. The black is going to get worn off anyway, considering how I wear my shells.

Thankfully they didn't have any Leeds left, or I would have been screwed.

I had this question when dealing with buying my GF a pair of quality leather boots. The short answer is: there aren't really any non-designer marked-up, high quality leather riding boot-esque makers in the states, other than Frye. The closest alternative is the Wolverine 1000 Mile's women's line. They are on Sierra Trading Post in seconds here. I believe they are currently eligible for coupons (they weren't for a while) though sizes are limited. But prices are relatively reasonable (similar to Frye's) if you have to buy in firsts quality. They are CXL though and goodyear welted, which trumps Frye IMHO.

Does AE have cap-toe semi-brogue with this exact brogue styling? http://www.paulevansny.com/products/the-brando

Did a quick search on their website for filtered for cap-toe styles and didn't find anything. I think the closest might be Rutledge?

Please do. I live less than 5 minutes from the factory, but I've never tried contacting them about this.

Just got an email from Nick Horween. He generously agreed to give me a quick tour of the company on the 8th. Stay tuned. If you guys have questions you might want me to ask Nick, I will be happy to do so.

Try to get some info about AE's outstanding order of non-standard shell colors :D

Also, there has been much discussion about the quality of AE shell vs Alden shell... is there any real difference when it leaves Horween's premises?

He probably isn't allowed to answer these questions, but hey... its worth trying!
You are a very lucky guy to get to go on this tour! Have fun.

I have a couple cappuccino shoes on order. I'll just take some walnut! I'll save you some work. HAHA!

These are excellent questions, Spitshine. I will be sure to gently ask Nick in person. I am looking forward to the tour as well, although the choice of what shoes to wear will likely be non-trivial!

+1

I want something that's basically a Strand without the medallion.

Fifth Ave and rutledge would be the closest bets.

Not sure if anyone else has chimed in here, but I've had good experiences with Hitch-n-post myself. J
