Allen Edmonds Appreciation Thread - reviews, pictures, sizing, etc...

Help me spend some money! I thought I was taking a hiatus from purchasing shoes, but I recently received an Allen Edmonds gift card. My current collection includes:

Black Park Ave.
Walnut Dalton
Walnut Strand
Cordovan Strand (should be in hand shortly)

I'm considering the Cambridge, but I'm not sure if I should add another black shoe or add my first burgundy. What is my AE collection missing?

But every collection should include at least one Burgundy Cordovan Wingtip.

@ elstinnett: Since you don't have any wingtips in there, I'd go that route.

Do they make the MacNeil (a longwing) in bourbon? If so, that's a great new color that's not as dark as the burnished brown and not as flashy as walnut. If not, they just have a pebble grain brown color. This will be more casual because it's a longwing and a blucher.

The other good option is the McAllister, which is a regular wingtip and a balmoral.

I think I agree. I'd get a lot of use from a burgundy Cambridge.

Definitely not a black Cambridge.

I wasn't thinking black until the Shoebank located a pair of seconds in excellent shape. I still think I'm leaning toward the burgundy Cambridge.

Not something I'd thought of before. How's the fit with the Patriot? I've had mixed success with slip-on loafers in the past...however, I haven't tried an AE loafer before.

I'm not sure how much use I'd get from a suede chukka right now, but I think my next purchase after this is likely to be a chukka.

Voting burg shell Cambridge as well... burg wings can be dressed up or dressed down and go with just about any suit color or jean combo.

For extra credit, I would go with a Neumora for a more flashy look or something in either bourbon or chili.

Looking for some advice:

I have 7 pair of AEs, so I am no newcomer to the shoes, or quality shoes for that matter. But, I am having an issue where I need some advice. I have had a pair of Allen Edmond Jeffersons in Walnut for about a year now. Initially I used the AE Walnut shoe polish. Then a local shoe shine/supply store suggested using neutral polish to get a higher shine. I have been for a few months now, and have great success in getting the toe of the shoe to have a mirror like shine, which I love. However, I noticed recently they seemed a bit darker than when I first got them, and upon receiving a pair of AE Walnut Daltons the other day, I realized how dark they had gotten. They almost look chili colored.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get back to the original walnut color. I wiped them down with acetone nail polish remover, and they lightened up some, upon conditioning them and reapplying polish, they went right back to the darker color. They look pretty cool a little darker, but it is not what was meant for the shoe. Can anyone help with some advice? I'm afraid to ask the local shoe shop for advice again, and thought someone here could point me in the right direction.

It's possible the leather has taken up the color. After acetone, you can try Saphir Renomat or turpentine. Or send them back to AE for refinishing.

Your Jeffersons have definitely darkened, but they also started a different color from the Daltons. I am not sure why but they are a darkest AE walnuts in my closet.

I would start with Renovateur. A couple of heavy coats left to dry for a few minutes, followed by heavy buffing and no polish would be my suggestion.

The leather on those two shoes are different, they aren't the same. The Jeffersons use a higher quality leather that I have noticed were always a bit darker than their typical walnut calf found on their normal shoes. I asked the same question when I looked at the Rutledge in burnished walnut calf. I have also noticed that my walnut strands have definitely darkened up a little bit, and personally, i kinda like it, so comparing a brand new shoe to one that is a year old with different leather may not be the best for color comparisons. I will say however, your Jeffersons definitely have a reddish hue to it, gorgeous shoe regardless.

As far are fixing it... I would say to do a nice rub down of Saphir Renovatteur. This happened with my cordovan strands, they became a very dark brown which I was not too crazy about. After one treatment with Saphir, it lightened up a tad. I will do them once a month and see how it goes from there, I would imagine after 1 or 2 more, the leather will lighten back up to its original color, hopefully.

Though I've yet to buy any Saphir products, my understanding is you want to us Reno'Mat, not Renovateur, in this case. Or perhaps something in between like their Cleaning Soap.
