EDIT: I've already got some Saphir Renovateur on the way.

AE recommends their Dark Brown Premium Polish.  I've used it on this boot and really like the results.

I can get these for 114.75 after a 15% discount and also would be able to try them on at the store.

I realize the quality is not top notch, so I'm open to other suggestions.

These are made in USA and goodyear welted

I have a pair of their chukkas and I am very pleased.  Sizing is true to size

Walkover is a good suggestion. Also try Gorilla Shoe, which is also USA-made and welted. Here is an example:

I often see these discounted. I'll bet with a little online searching you find a pair of Walkover or Gorilla - assuming you like the styles.

I thought that might happen too, but my heel was very close to gripping when I first got them. I have a really narrow heel, though, and once I worked in the sole, it had less motivation to pull away.

If you are already sticking with the shoes (meaning you wore them outside), I would at least consider the tongue pad. They're pretty darn cheap and not permanent. You may really like it, and if you don't, you're not out much (the local AE store here will give you a set if you want them, but they're just a buck or two for a set anyways).

Going back to the lacing, the criss-cross should work, but I feel that places a lot of pressure in the two sections where it crosses below. I used the double helix style for a bit because it gave a similar snugness while spreading the pressure on the top of the foot.

Where can one actually find these tongue pads?

I have one more store to try out, Gordons in Pittsburgh, but they are going to have the same problem, 10 different styles, but only 2 to 3 lasts in the style of shoes that I would like to purchase, which I probably allready tried on. I might just have to go on a road trip to ohio..

The really high end shoe shore here dosn't sell AE's any more. The sell Aldens, Carmina and other top end shoes. I might just have to get measured there. The owner does know all the lasts since he has worked with AE for 35 years, just dosn't have then in store. He can order any I would like.
What about Little's in Squirrel Hill?

Thanks... I would've gone with their Walnut Premium Polish, or with the Light- or Mid-Brown from Saphir.

Thanks again!

or just get bass as cheap alternative.

I've looked at those quite a few times only to be reminded that they don't feel it's worthwhile to make them in a 7D.

You could either order them from an inexpensive company like feetrelief.com or stop by your local AE store and get a set.
