Strands, Fifth Avenues and the other AE's are 30% off at Brooks Brothers, today only. Works out to be about $243 for the Strands and Fifth Avenues.

Got my Bayfields back from recrafting:

I had them done with the butyl leather sole, rather than the commando sole, and I really like how they turned out. The boots look much less clunky, IMHO.

Nice, I like this. Do you think they have put a Dainite sole on if you requested it?

I doubt it since Dianite is not readily available in the US (Nick V. @ B. Nelson/VIP Shoes are the only ones I know here in the US that have Dianite). I am sure there are pseudo-Dianite soles that can be installed by other third party cobblers.

I meant the Dainite-like sole AE puts on Malverns.

I get the impression they would have done anything I wanted them to. The butyl soles were a no-cost option; I have no idea if the Malvern-type sole would have been any different.

+1 AE is very helpful in that regard and really do an excellent refurbishing (not just re-soling) job with shoes. Enjoy the new feel. Had those on my Fifth Streets and they were excellent.

For the benefit of newcomers, these are bluchers (open flap lacing) and therefore by default, Casualwear. This is why they originally came with what are called Mini Lug Soles (Commando soles are more chunky and deeper grooved than Lug Soles). They are a rough terrain, bad weather or walk in the forest boot. A Balmoral (enclosed or emerging lacing) would be a Dress boot so for the purists out there, one wouldn't put a flat leather sole on a blucher boot. That said, and they are your boots so as long as you are happy, then congratulations!

Original Allen Edmonds Mini Lug Sole, featured on the Bayfield boot:

versus

Vibram Commando Sole:

Note the much deeper trenching of the grooves on the Commando sole. Though they appear the same at a glance, these differences are apparent. The Commando sole will offer more traction. Again, I point this out for the benefit of newcomers to understand the differences.

Though bluchers, the Bayfield will still look dressy with pants covering the lacing.

I'm liking these more and more every time i wear them. AE needs to offer more shoes in different shell colors besides just black and burg.

I love this color. Is "cappuccino" the name that AE uses? If not, do you know what AE calls it? Looks somewhere between Alden's cigar and ravello. Is that your take on it?
