Windows 7 Student Price

Hello all, hopefully I have a deal for some of you here. I haven't seen it mentioned yet, so I thought I should disseminate some information about it.

While I was surfing on the Microsoft webpage and pc forums I found that Windows 7 will have a pre-order student price. It seems that you can get Windows 7 Home Professional for about $30 if you are a student. You will need your .edu address from a participating school. It is likely most participate.

As per usual, the first versions of Windows 7 will no doubt be awful for the first 6 months. But for $30 at least it will be a cheap upgrade.

You can access it at:
http://www.microsoft.com/student/en/...windows-7.aspx

or if you don't trust the link just google: windows 7 Student.

Cheers

I'd hardly assume that windows 7 will be horrible for the first 6 months. Pretty much everyone that's reviewed it has said it is the opposite experience of Vista when it launched. I've been running build 7100 for months and I've had very few problems. The drivers aren't a big change from vista, unlike going for xp to vista, which required manufacturers to do a total rewrite, and that will have a huge impact on how painless of an upgrade it is. 7 is the shiznit and their pricing for 7 in general is really good. I'm planning on buying the family pack (3 licenses) for $150. It's definitely their best OS to date. I've been gaming recently on it and i've played some really old games and a brand new game that doesn't support 7 yet, and I haven't had any issues so far running the 64-bit version. It even told me my hard drive was about to die, which is frankly pretty awesome. Monitoring SMART status is nothing new for enterprise stuff, but this is the first time MS has put it directly in the OS.

I didn't download the Windows 7 beta so I haven't used it yet. However, I have heard great things about it. That is why I posted the student deal in case some student members had not yet heard about it.

GQGeek - are you sure that family pack deal is still available? I thought it was a limited time offer a few months ago. We purchased a couple of 3-packs in the Spring when the RC came out. The tablet improvements in 7 have been fantastic. I've also been using it on my media center PC but it's faltering there a bit. It didn't recognize the HDMI-out on my motherboard and I have resolution problems with some games but that's about it. Anyway, you can still get the RC download so I'd recommend downloading it and giving it a try before buying anything. Also, for comparison, download the latest copy of Ubuntu :-)

Can't get it "officially" from MS though. Gonna have to torrent it or d/l it from somewhere else.

I was able to get Win7 Pro in 32bit & 64bit free through the MSDNAA program at my university.

The family pack pricing is official. I read it somewhere on MS's website. What was temporary was the cheap upgrade for a single license (was $50 bucks or something).

And I actually have ubuntu dual-booting with 7 but I only use it for studying for IT stuff. I really don't like it for general use.

This, I'm running 64bit on my desktop and 32 on my lappy. Going fine without a hitch

Download it online somewhere.

I've been using the final build since it was first torrented. Just did the re-arm activation trick about a week ago. Very happy with it, but I don't like the new search functionality. I find it very strange that if I hit "WIN + F" it will bring up the search box, but if I start typing something in, nothing will happen until I choose a search location. Then, when I choose the damn search location, it empties out the search box. FFFFffffffffuuuuuuuuuuu ...

+1, being in MSDNAA is pretty great.

Now I feel stupid for having already pre-ordered at the "normal" reduced price ($50 or whatever it was).

It seems to be people are having a very good experience with W7. I have Vista machine that I will probably switch over, so these positive reviews make me more confident.

I highly recommend upgrading to 7.

And this is coming from an Apple guy.
