You can essentially approach anyone at any time. Really. Try it and you'll see what I mean, it's kinda easy if you have a goal and set your mind to it.

I'll add that I was a commuter in undergrad due to major family medical problems, too. I know how it is. Maybe this isn't the awesomest magical advice, but its something that helped me, though my problems were a little different. I was bemoaning the situation to a Prof of mine who was a kind of mentor to me at the time, and he said, "Hunts, don't worry about it. Just try again. Just go out, and try again." That's what I did. Don't worry about reasons why or analyze too much, just go and try again. Nothing is better for confidence than one pleasant interaction.
