Hand-made Henry Tompkins English Briefcase - Page 2

Oh, and I forgot to say: H. Tomkins said that his bags are made for life... so how come the quality seems substandard now? Did you contact him to get a free repair?

I ordered an HT briefcase this summer and can vouch for the quality. The stitching seems very solid. All around, the construction seems great. The leather is lovely and I'm not sure how Henry is making these bags for such reasonable prices. I've had lots of compliments on mine.

Admittedly, I've had the bag for less than six months. Still, there's no indication that any corners were cut. I plan to order from Henry again.

Now I understand all the hate for necroposts. Got me all excited for nothing.

the stitching on my bag is unraveling in 4-5 separate places. I sent a note to tompkins and he said it does happen occasionally. He offered to fix it for free if I got it to him but suggested I bring it to a local place to have it fixed if I live in a "far-flung place" (which I guess includes the US). If the stitching was coming undone in one place, I'd say it was a mistake. As it's coming off in many places, IMO it's shoddy work. I don't know anything about bag making, perhaps someone will tell me I'm wrong. I guess his offer of fixing it is reasonable but doesn't help me much.

^^tapdancer, just as a hint, you may want to send a personal message or email to the other poster, as he may not see this post in time.

Will do but could not as a newbie, I needed two posts here first...
But thanks for the advice anyway and thank for your thoughts!

Just a bump on this old thread. If someone is offering a used tompkins bag for sale, id like to know. Mine was stolen in NY recently.

I purchased "Briefcase-Lite" from Henry when I was living in London, back in 2007 or 2008. Very happy with it.
