Should I get a Geiger Counter?

Given the recent Dust Storms in Sydney, there is now talk that the dust may be radioactive as it was blown across from an area of Australia where the largest functioning uranium mine is located. I am thinking of getting a Geiger Counter. Even if the dust is somewhat radioactive probably I can't do much. However, I'd rather know than not know. There have also been atleast one instance in Sydney where residential a block of land that used to be the site for a factory that (made the glow stuff used on watches) has been found to have high levels of radioactive contamination.

Does anyone here have a Geiger Counter?

Should I got for a Western or Russian model?

If I go Russian, will I be able to work it out or am I going to have to give old Vladimir a buzz and ask him for a quick over the phone translation?

It's called radium. Prolonged exposure for years and years has been proven to cause forms of .

Have you researched what levels or radiation exposure are dangerous? Do you understand the difference? Ironically, many safe household items are radioactive, and will emit a background noise in your counter.

I ask because that's an expensive item to use one or twice to satisfy your curiosity. What would you do if the levels are .001 over the level considered 'safe'?

Can't you hire someone to check it for you? There are professionals that will come to your house to check for radon. I imagine that they could tell you if you're living with unsafe levels of radiation.
