Does your computer monitor face the door or do you?

I have a square office about 12' on a side, with two desks and one large monitor, an Apple 23" cinema display. The laptop and monitor are on one desk, and the other large desk is mainly for writing, reading, it has the phone, an inbox, some books, etc.

The large desk is against a wall in a corner. The computer desk is 90deg. from the other one, forming an "L" that goes into the center of the office. When I am at my computer, I am facing the door. When people come into the office, they are on the other side of the monitor. If they sit on the other side of the desk, they can't see me, so they have to slide the chair to the other side of the desk to have a conversation.

This is kind of annoying, but I also don't like people looking over my shoulder while I'm working at the computer.

So do you have your monitors facing towards or away from the door?

When I had an office, my monitor was always facing away from the door. This was because at the time, I spent more time on SF per day than I did working and didn't want to get caught, especially by those I managed and those who managed me.

For two years I had an office that could only be configured one way, with the door behind me. There was another office next door that was most conveniently reached by walking through mine, so people entering my room might or might not be there to see me. I wasn't concerned about anybody seeing my monitor (no internet access, so there was never anything on there but work). But I don't like people sneaking up behind me. I put a couple of wide angle mirrors on my monitor bridge and arranged some cube wall modules like baffles to visually block off the path to the room next door.

My setup is similar. I don't like the idea of people being able to walk by and look at my monitor. I don't do anything I shouldn't be doing on my work PC, but my monitor used to be viewable by people who walked by. For some reason this always creeped me out. It felt like people were checking out what I was doing as they walked by.

Thanks. I also must ask myself, what would Don Draper do? He faces the door, and his typewriter (in a recent episode) faces him. So there you go.

Computer or not, if given the option, I always sit facing the door. It's just comfortable being able to see or greet anyone that comes through the door without surprises.

They had secretaries to do the work. Then they'd waste time by banging them on their computerless desk.

That's why I was contemplating moving the computer 90 degrees, so the door would be at my right when working on the computer and in front of me when working at the desk without a computer.

Whenever I see photos of people's computer setup, there is a wall behind their monitor. So that means the person can't be facing the door, but the people that come into the office aren't looking at the back of the monitor either. Hence my question...

I spend a lot of my time at an Ops console, I have 10 monitors that face a large window. When I'm not on the raised floor I face the doorway.

i hate doing anything facing away from the open space/door etc. i like to be able to see whats coming and would rather be against a wall looking outward. i may be paranoid or something but thats what i like.

I face the door - just in case I ever have to shoot someone as soon as they walk into my office.
