I need to get my life on track...

Ok so I am seriously concerned for my future. My first year of college definably did not go how I wanted it to. I'm in a decent school in Canada, and while I didn't destroy my chances of getting the 25/75 GPA for decent Law Schools I'll have to work my ass off to actually get it. I spent my summer working in retails so nothing great to put on my resume there..

I'm pretty concerned that I have way too little time to build up my resume. God knows why I didn't seriously start slow in high school. I know I'll get good grades, since academics are not really my problem, unless personal stuff comes up that makes it a problem.

But anyway what's a good starting point from here? I'm doing poli sci (hopefully honors but it's not guaranteed) with a minor in business (well, commerce.) I joined quite a few clubs some that provide solid volunteer opportunities, and some leadership experience.

Basically I know that the next three years are going to be more work than play. Is it essential to get internships for all the succeeding summers? Where do i start looking for them; I want to go into law but obv. have no expertise to provide.

no offense broseph, but you don't really have a "life" to speak of yet. i know that at his juncture whatever you're doing seems incredibly critical, but if you're an undergrad waiting to go to law school.........the point i'm trying to make is that unless you use and sell crack your life is not really "off track" to begin with. you have plenty of time. enjoy it a little

You are in Canada so unlike in the United States getting into Law School will be harder than filling out the back of a match book. The good thing fro you is, the better schools are actually all about grades and the lesser schools, like Windsor, are the ones who actually care about activities. Don't worry so much about that extra curricular crap IF you have the grades to get yourself into a decent Ontario school.

I'm actually thinking about going to the states. Against just thinking. Canada is actually pretty forgiving grade wise. UoT takes 3 best undergrad years, I think Osgoode (or maybe York) takes last 2. US on the other hand does not like to give kids the easy way out.

So you were below a 3.0 in your first year? Maybe even below 2.5? Do you have an interest in starting something new either on or off campus? Could you kick off an amazing fundraiser for some sort of charitable purpose (local or international) and carry it through the rest of your time in school? Recruit volunteers, manage a massive yearly event, whatever? Found a fraternity chapter at your school? Or get appointed to a local non-profit's board of directors? Are you popular enough already that by your fourth year, you could run for student union/association president and win? Do you care to become heavily involved in provincial or national politics, shake hands with your local MP, help run his or her campaign in the next election? Can you do an honour's thesis? Can you pull a 3.85 or so, or better, for the next three years? FWIW my first year was a semi-fail, so I did most of the things listed above, ended up with a strong final two years (strong enough to make it into most Canadian law schools if GPA was all that mattered), and I'm still a total washed-up failure. So maybe don't worry about it and just smoke dope. Who wants to be a lawyer anymore anyway?

knocking up a prostitute should put you back on track.

Western takes your best 2. Osgoode and UoT are both very competitive and I'm pretty sure UoT is very unforgiving. You need a very high GPA for both (like 3.8+). Anyway, if you want to go to law school, but your ass for the best grades possible and don't let other shit interfere.
