Friend just told me he has Stage 4 Lung Cancer

A friend who I used to work with just told me that he has Stage 4 Lung Cancer. Apparently he was diagnosed on July 2. For those who know something about this, he said it was small-cell at diagnosis, went esophogeal fairly rapidly and has spread lymphatically.

Apparently he went through 4 weeks of Chemotherapy but has now chosen to stop treatment.

From what I'm finding online, it sounds like I may be attending a funeral in the near future.

FUCK!!!

P.S. This guy is a few years younger than I am.

Sorry to hear. That's really sad.

Damn, sorry to hear it man. Was he a smoker?

yes, you might. but if you consider this guy a good friend dont just run off. if he was close to you, im sure its hard to be around him. just make sure youre as available as possible to just be normal and hang out or just keep him company. ive been through this before more than once. it might be uncomfortable and inconvenient, but try your best to do what you can while he's still around. 10 years from now you'll feel a lot better if you do

Not good. My cousin heard the same in March. She has two little kids. Never smoked.

Yes, he smoked. Still might for all I know.

I told him to keep me up to date. He actually lives in Arizona but since I am in California now there's not a lot I can do.

I'll try to see him next time I'm back, but that won't be until November.

Terrible news, Brad.
Ever since I hit forty I have feared just such news. We feel so invincible in our youth but become so aware of our mortality as we start hearing about our peers dying of cancer and heart disease.

Good luck with your friend Brad. Had a neighbor with the same diagnosis many years back. I'll spare you the gruesome details but it was rather horrible for the last month or so of her life.

Man, I am sorry to hear this. Are there alternative forms of treatment for this that your friend is pursuing?

fuckkkk. I'm sorry to hear that. From what you've described, it does not sound too good. Hope all works out though.

Very sad but not surprising given that it's small cell cancer. Usually widely metastatic when discovered because it's so insidious. Almost uniformly fatal.

Bradford,

Sorry to hear this. I'm afraid your fears about an impending funeral may prove too true. I just lost my mother to colonic cancer -which had spread to her lungs- last month. She was diagnosed early in May. Not exactly the same, I know, but I've seen how fast things can go. .

Since you've asked him to keep you up-to-date, perhaps I might advise you to also actively keep in touch with him and his family. It'll be a great support to them.

For you: all the best in the coming months/time.
