Eating, Socialising, Culture Recommendations for 5 weeks in USA

Cross post as this seems equally at home here. Thanks guys

Hi Gentlemen,

I'm flying into the US for about 5 weeks this coming Monday. I have 15 nights on the East Coast (one night in Boston following a Sox game and one night in Washington, the rest in NYC), then 7 nights in San Francisco/2 nights in Yosemite, 3 nights in Las Vegas and 5 nights in LA (not booked yet but hopefully in West Hollywood).

I'm travelling with a good buddy and we're mostly backpacking (very un-SF I know), although we are staying in hotels in Washington and Vegas.

I know there are various posts about shopping in NYC/eating in NY/shopping in LA etc (and I've printed a few out - Mr Moo's NYC thread, a cheap eating in NYC thread) but I was hoping to consolidate opinions on all of the places I'm visiting in one thread.

Where are good shopping spots in each city? I know NYC will be easy enough - I know Woodbury Common, I know Century 21. I know the Vegas outlets and the Grove in LA and Rodeo Drive - even if it is just for a peek.

How about cheap(ish) places to eat in each place?

How about good day trips? Is a trip to the Hamptons worth it, for example?

Most importantly, good bars for my buddy and I to enjoy your fine women's company!

Also, places of interest, particularly if they are slightly underground. I mean, I'm definitely going to check out the Met, MoMa, Guggenheim etc but I really like slightly edgier stuff - Ryan McGinley, Ed Templeton, artists like that. Where do they show? Is SF good for that sort of stuff?

Basically, if I'm coming to your city, what do you recommend? What do you consider a must see?

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

In DC go to the mall and museums.
Eat at ray's hellburger and stop in at my store and buy something you won't go wrong.

Jersey Gardens in Elizabeth, NJ (an outlet mall that has a Saks Off Fifth, Neiman Marcus Last Call, and all the other usual suspects) is a lot closer to Manhatten than Woodbury Commons (WC is out in East Bumblefuck). Just sayin'. In fact, I think there are buses from the Port Authority in NYC that go specifically to Jersey Gardens.
