Another one, I always use the BREAD as a strong indicator of the restaurant quality... tells me SOO much about what to expect right off the bat.

Single crusty slices? probably recycled
warmed whole mini buns, probably first and only use.
quality bread is often a good sign of a quality meal to come...
Hell, even down to the overall look and feel of the basket it's served in tells me a lot.

Have not been, but isn't it run by a former Kinch protege? Or maybe I'm thinking of another place. Ah, yeah, it is helmed by the former chef de cuisine at Manresa. Was the poor review based on the food or service/decor? Manresa... that's a place to try even though it's a drive from SF. Might be a place to stop by on the way back from spending a day down in Monterey or Santa Cruz.

I had lunch with a bunch of co-workers at one of those slightly delapidated chinese restaurants in chinatown yesterday. I enjoyed the food, but I tried not to think about what goes on the in the kitchen at a place like that.
