If one were to want to start a simple blog, what site would you choose for a non-techie.

tumblr is fun and pretty idiot-proof. easy to upload images and videos too.

I'm principally interested in posting high res (10MP+) photos. Would the above comfortably handle this type of upload capacity? If not, does a free blog site to support such file sizes exist?

You'd probably be better off hosting the images on Flickr or some other image host, then link to them from your blog (or tumblr).

^ Cheers. Yes, I had considered that. Is a site such as Sartorialist blog-hosted or from an external site (flickr etc). His pics seem to be pretty high res..?

The Sartorialist is hosted on Blogger which is in my opinion the easiest to use. I personally prefer the flexibility of hosted Wordpress, but Blogger is good and easy... not sure what kind of image limit there is.. its probably quite high. You can upload your images directly to Blogger, as I believe you can upload directly to Wordpress as well, though don't quote me on that one. If your hosting your own Wordpress of course you can have as much as you like, but its harder to manage.

His pics are around 500x700.

One advantage of hosting at an external site is that you won't be taking up space or bandwidth at your blogging host, and you can reuse or link to the photos from other sites. Some free blogging hosts don't allow direct linking to media on their blogs.
