eBay "Final Value" fees... WTF?

When did they start this nonsense? A listing used to cost less than $.75, now they're taking 10%!?!

Half of my $23 in fees were for an item that was sold to a buyer who bitched out on me.

Huh, I haven't sold anything on ebay in quite a while, and it was much lower than 10% last time. First no bad feedback against buyers, now exorbitant fees. Too bad there's no comparable alternatives.

I've heard countless complaints, i'm certain enough sellers exist that would defer immediately were any sort of solution introduced. It wouldn't even have to be perfect, just closer to the way ebay was. Any takers for the challenge?

You could always go and tell the Europeans how anti-competitive and bad it is for the common European Man, Woman and Child and then they might just go off and slap a $500M fine on them.

Yup...I know, I didn't realize it either until I got my latest invoice....it was pretty sneaky because they launched it at the same time as they were giving their oh-so-generous "free listing" offers. Here I thought I was taking advantage of free listings, but they were sticking it to me in the end, big time!

The only potential competitor out there is Bonanzle, which has been growing with more and more disenchanted Ebayers....but the volume is still so far lower that I don't think it makes an impact.

This really pissed me off. I was selling a digital SLR on a photo forum, and the buyer asked me to list it on ebay for him to buy because he was more comfortable doing it that way for some reason, and since I didn't think the listing would be more than 2 bucks, I of course did it. Then at the end of the month I get an email telling me they're taking like $27 from my paypal account because of final value fees. And of course paypal takes a cut of every payment too...

wow they are killing me here in fees... not even fair... $8 in fees? fuck off

Ya.. I didn't realize this either and recently sold something on ebay and the fees are exhorbitant to say the least. Doesn't help that their "fees" page make no mention of this at all, unless you hit the specific free listing page. Try $25 in fees for mine. You can list 5 free listings and end them immediately and then you'll be charged the old model of 8.75% of the first $25 and 3.50% after that. Lamerz. http://pages.ebay.com/sell/June2009/List5Free/ P.S. I also noticed that there is less and less decent stuff to buy there now and it's crammed mostly with garbage like guides or aftermarket crap that nobody needs. sad state of affairs.

so the key is dont take advantage of the 5 free listings?
just end them right away and you'll be charged the old way

No, the 5 free listings just gets you the 8.75% or $20, whatever is less deal.

I also like the fine print: "*Excludes items with a Start/Buy It Now/Reserve price of $18 million and above."

Yeah, you'll have to do the math and figure out which method is more beneficial to you depending on where the ending price is.

They've been doing this for a long time. They decreased insertion fees tremendously last fall, but heavily marked up the final value fee. It's even worse for store items. My monthly eBay invoice is usually around $200, and that's during a pretty shoddy year.

yep. i cant wait for a good heavily populated ebay alternative. they just have too much recognition that people don't go anywhere else too much.

Good for local buys where you can meet face to face but there's no protection at all for buyers or sellers so any distance thing I would stay away from
