"sexy" vs. "boring" work.. Does it matter to you?

Do you care if people at the cocktail party think your job is boring or exciting?

How does that figure into your overall desirability factor together with income, security, portability, etc? Would you rather make $100K in advertising or $200K in tax accounting? What do you think makes a job sexy or boring (and I don't mean in day to day necessarily, we all know a job is a job and you deal with 90% of the same bullshit anywhere - rules, stupid coworkers, sacrifices, etc)

i used to care and don't anymore. would rather be an electrician at the forman level making 250k+ without anyone giving a fuck.

Being that I hate accounting, I would take the advertising job. Anyway, most jobs that sound sexy aren't. I bet my job sounds sexy to a lot of people, but if they knew what it involved 90% of the time they would high five me and then laugh.

I'm hoping to be a philosophy professor, so I imagine that will be sexy. "What do you do?" "I'm a philosopher." Think about it.

Accounting student here...other accountants like you, but most people stereotype it like anything else. For every generic job title though, there are a lot of different positions you can hold. I could do anything from a Tax CPA, controller at a surf company, non-profit CFO, govt. work, IRS tax agent (carry a gun), or FBI/CIA. Of course, saying you're a surgeon probably goes over better than saying you're a garbage collector, even if you run the city garbage collections process and make bank.

Think about it.

Well, being a philosophy professor doesn't make you a philosopher.

But fuck, dude, good luck. It's a TOUGH field to break into - both grad school, and especially teaching something like philosophy.

I know, but I'm only an undergrad and am presenting at professional conferences and (at the behest of two of my professors) will be submitting a paper to a high ranking professional journal soon. Apparently my professors think that I can do it, so who am I to argue? I also started taking all the graduate classes that were being offered in it at my university when I was 18. Edit: I'm not trying to brag. What I'm trying to do is say that I understand how difficult it is and I am working as hard as I possibly can to achieve my goal.

I work in advertising. It's not sexy, people just think it is. Most people wish their jobs were more "creative"--like being an advertising art director, but the truth is AD's answer to clients and to agency officers who pander to clients and any true creativity is squashed long before an ad ever makes it to print or TV. Accounting is a creative profession and IMHO sales is a truly creative profession. Guys who sell advertising and marketing well are creative and skilled. Start with nothing but the good reputation of a studio or agency and convince a client to pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into your business--without any of that "get 'em drunk, get 'em laid" madmen stuff--that stuff is not common anymore.

I was lucky in a way my first full time job was so boring it made me promise myself I would never do anything like it again (low grade clerk in the tax office). I stuck it 2 and a half years, and managed to save enough to volunteer as an archaeologist for a month, which led to full time employment. Nearly ten years later I've never regretted leaving the safe, dull job for an interesting one for a minute. I'm out of field work at the moment and still don't earn a lot, but while I have only myself to look after I will not be doing anything for the money.

advertising is a lot more exciting than accounting I would choose that. I don't know what are the average salaries in the USA, but for me (from Hungary...) is 100K more than great, I wouldn't want more.

I have had about the sexiest jobs anyone could ever have for most of my career. frankly, I try to avoid talking about them, or really tone them down, because otherwise I come off as an a-hole. sexy jobs can be over rated.
