This post is a thank you, but definately style related. One of our gracious members knew my shoe size and that I was looking for a great antique-brown dress shoe. I got an email/heads up about an ebay ad that was for a pair of Santoni hand grade shoes that retail for nearly $1000 that fit the bill. I also got a description..."These shoes are the steal of the century"... Thanks alot Drew. I'm not sure how to post pics, but I put an ebay link below. I'm only 20, but am turning 21 in a few weeks. The shoes should be here Monday, but I wanted your opinion on some ways I may be able to use them outside of the suit world. I think I could pull them off with a jean/sportcoat look... Would this be a no no? I know they'll look great in my tans and brown selections, but want to get ideas to wear them in a more casual situation when I go out on the town. I'll post more when I get em next week. Thanks for your help, Pete Pete's new Santoni Hangrade Shoes

Nice shoes Pete; and what a steal. They'd look great with jeans, you just have to wear the right ones. I'd stay away from any boot-cut, or baggier jeans though. Try something along the lines of Levi's 501. This look is very prevalent in Italy right now (perhaps its always been?). A sportcoat would compliment them nicely also, they may be too dressy to wear without one. As you've said, they would look great with your tan and brown clothes, while this is true, try going for something bolder while out clubbing. Since this is a fairly conservative shoe, you may want to add a little drama to take away from that. Try a bold, colorful, striped or check shirt; Do you own anything by Etro? Or you can even wear a black sportcoat; something that wouldn't be the norm in the US, but as I've said, Italians wear ANYTHING with brown shoes.

Hey Mike, I was hoping you'd chime in after all of your brown shoe revelations in Italy I agree with the bold shirt idea. I've got an amazing striped Etro shirt (Orange and blue striped diaganolly) that would work very well. I've also got a Paul Smith shirt that would work great. I'll be careful with the earth tones. I was mostly thinking about pant colors, but I see your point. Thanks for the tip about the jeans. I've got a nice pair of straight legged DDC Lab's that would fit the 501 bill perfectly. I couldn't pass these babies up, and from what I've been told, the pics don't do them justice as the are quite stylish in design. Have fun over there... I'm leaving to head to your stomping grounds (NYC) on Tuesday for a short trip. It looks like I'm looking at a May 19-21 departure date to head to the city for the summer...

Pete, those are very good looking shoes and they should give you pleasure for a long time. Just do not wear them every day, day after day. Shoes should rest for at least 24 hours after wearing, to dry out and regain their shape (get a pair of well fitting shoe trees). Taking that precaution, they will last for many years. What to wear them with? They will go with anything if you avoid the extremes on either end of the scale (shorts and tuxedo).

Thanks bengal-stripe. I have taken your advice in the past about shoe care from other posts. I use nice shoe trees, rotate them regularly in the wardrobe and keep them clean and polished. I have noticed that my shoes life has been greatly improved since I learned the tips on this board. Thanks, I think I will enjoy them... Don't worry about me on the ends of those spectrums. Pete
