Makes no sense to throw out food. For me it was never a matter of being poor or not, just a matter of not wanting to be wasteful. Really it comes down to if the taste is affected or not, if so throw it out. I don't think the mold on bread is really that dangerous to your health.

Meat of course is another matter and goes out at the first sign of funk.

I thought all of those fancy French sauces and marinades were to cover up the taste of spoiled meat?

Anyway I think eating moldy bread can be dangerous. Even if you do not see the mold on the part of the bread you are eating.

Happened at lunch just today. A tiny spot of mold started on the crust of a half-finished loaf of italian bread. I simply trimmed off the offending peice and ate the rest of the bread. It's been 3 hours and feeling fine... so far.

If I wanted mold on my food, I would have purchased it when it already had mold. Cheese mold can be good, but not when it is month old cheddar slices with a green bloom. Bread mold is not something I would eat, or have ever eaten, and if there was mold on one piece of bread, I would toss the entire loaf. Chiaro?

My parents' grocery shopping was frugal enough that it was rare for anything to get to the point of mold. Which then merited throwing away, but mostly because by then it would have been stale anyway.

I have to say, growing up, we ate funky food more than once.

These days, if I see any mold on a loaf of bread, it's feeding the birds and other critters.

Yeah, stale bread has always gone to the nearest pond for the birds and fish.

doesn't matter to me, well except for milk. i've even tried aging beef (which i mentioned here few months back) and the last piece i ate put me down couple of days. but with regards to my kids, i have thrown away food that has moldy specks just so to be safe.

I do not see the logic in this at all. If you throw out meat the first sign of funk why not bread? You can easily run the risk of food poisoning if you eat bread with any amount of mold visible or not. Why take the risk?

Mold on cheese is not a problem, but mold on bread can be dangerous. It will turn you into a witch.

What about Huitlacoche(sp?)?

I grew up poor. We lived in a two bedroom apartment in a bad neighborhood growing up. I don't ever remember eating food with mold on it. And it's not an "American" thing because we moved here from another country.

If food has mold on it, I throw it out.
