$1 every time (on like a $12 meal). I'm friends with the hostesses though.

Yep - I also tip a dollar, unless the food's not ready when I get there (when they tell me to get there). I figure that putting my food in boxes and then a bag and ringing me up is worth the same tip I give the bartender - most of whom simply pour either beer or scotch in a glass.

For carryout I usually tip the change or a dollar and change. I tip way more to baristas.

No tip on the CC charge. If I'm getting take-out from a place that does mostly sit-down business, I will give a dollar in cash per bag of carry-out.

If a waiter or bartender who relies on tips for their income is the one taking the order and putting it together, then yes I tip. If it is a hostess or cashier, then no.

I've never even considered tipping for carry-out and I don't see me doing it anytime soon.

I think we go too far sometimes with obligatory ideas of tipping; except for certain extraordinary circumstances (in which I would probably tip), all the carry-out I can recall required the waitress or the cashier to walk about ten feet to the order-area and carry my bag to the cash register. She needs a 15% TIP for that? Umm... no.

I've worked in restaurants and the waiters generally do package up your food, which sometimes also includes making side salads, adding garnishes, packaging any bread, side sauces etc. Whether that's worth a tip is debatable. I'm just saying a good to-go person has done all of the prep before you get there, such that when you do arrive, they simply walk over to pick up your food and check you out. People who are good at their jobs often make it look easy.

Because they are cute and I've been going out to drink with them a few times a year for the past few years. I would not tip at a place I went to once or twice and never again. Only when I am a regular.

If it's carry out from a place I will also dine in and eat at, I tip 10%. If it's a place I just do carry out at, I'll toss them $2.

As to, "Why?"

1) I worked in the industry, in several roles, and feel for anyone working their way through school
2) I'm a generous guy
3) I hate looking like a cheap ****.

A big +1. Personally, I don't even think that waiters should rely on tips for their income. I think they should be paid a fair wage, and any tip or gratuity would go to the restaurant bottom line. But I don't ever foresee that happening, one major reason being that a lot of the best waiters would find other work.

Usually not, unless they go an extra mile in some way...based on circumstances. I am also annoyed by those obnoxious tip-jars in places like Starbucks.

On the other thread, everybody is giving you congrats, so I didn't want to feel unoriginal and just add on. SO, I'll say it here... CONGRATS on the good news.
