Do You Tip When You Order Carry-Out?

Not sure if this belongs here or in General Chat but I've always wondered proper etiquette/procedure for this situation. The first time I did it I payed a tip but was never charged for it and stopped doing it ever since. I went to pick up some Thai for dinner tonight and felt like the waitress who helped me was expecting a tip and kind of felt guilty that I didn't leave one.

So tip or not?

occasionally if it's at a place where i know the server i might throw them a few bucks but it's like $2 and not based on any kind of percentage. In general though the point of tipping is for service and when you do carryout there's no service so i say screw it. the one thing that always makes me feel sort of like a dick though is making sure i put the total down in the blank line when there is a tip option included on the CC receipt. It's consciously denying the tip, but what it really is is just protecting your damned credit card.

What? Why would you tip them for carrying your bag from the kitchen to the front. Hell no, thats ridiculous.

good tip, i usually leave it blank. i'll be sure to not leave the total line blank anymore.

also she wasn't hot but she thanked me when i ordered, the bartender thanked me when i was getting up to leave and the waitress thanked me as I was walking out the door.

They really earned a few dollars by showing you some common courtesy.

thats not what i'm saying... but ever feel like some people try a little harder like they want a tip? thats how it felt.

also i think its ridiculous to expect a tip, but various people i know who work in the food services sector say the get upset when they dont get them. go figure.

I tip about 15% for carry-out.

Hell no. I think it incredibly pushy when places that just have a register where you seat yourself leave that tip column in there. Carry out means no extra service was provided, therefore no tip required.

never have, never will. funny story though: there was a restaurant in arlington that I tried in which it was completely self service - to the point where you placed your own entree orders with the kitchen. when I got the check (you even have to walk up to a cashier) they started at me disapprovingly as I did not tip.

I usually leave a few dollars because the carry out staff are usually the ones that take, assemble, box or otherwise prepare and deliver your order. I don't see this as being much different than if you were to sit down in the dining room other than you didn't leave your mess behind you when you leave. Sometimes these same staff are assigned strictly to carry out duty for that day but are on the same wage scale as the other staff. Meaning if you stiff the tip there they are out just as if you stiffed them at the table. Everyone makes a big deal about tipping wait staff, I just see this as an extension of the same courtesy.

If it's a place that I frequent, I usually leave a standard tip. Otherwise, I leave a buck or two.

I usually don't.
