Computer Nerdz: Broken Laptop Screen - How Do I Connect To A Monitor?

I have this old PowerBook that has a bunch of stuff I need on it. Apparently the screen is busted. It's this eerie green/black morass. So, I hooked it up to an old monitor and it simply shows my desktop background. I'm assuming this is because it's automatically set up for dual-screen, but how would I go about undoing this if I can't see anything on my laptop's screen? I can't justify paying for a new screen for an ancient PowerBook. Halp.

Misread your question.. Sounds like you need your external to mirror rather than extend your display. http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25864?viewlocale=en_US

If you can move your mouse around and eventually it shows up on the external monitor, it's set for dual display.

Im not familiar with powerbooks but many windows-based laptops, even the older ones, have a hardware key combination that allows you to switch between external/internal display or both. You'd want to switch it to external. It's usually a "function" key plus one of the F-keys.

Also, if possible, remote-access the computer from another computer on your network and copy the files that way or use some type of "remote desktop" feature... if such a thing exists for a powerbook.

Another option that I would try if it was a windows-based laptop would be to remove the hard drive, use a IDE-to-USB adapter and plug it into another computer as an external USB hard drive.

Thanks for your help, guys. I found the prompt... Google was providing a lot of useless results.
