oh ok. I have no idea what 529 means. That'll teach me for not being American. And no, I don't know of anyone among my family and friends who did the yearly contribution thing for their godkid. Anyhow, thanks for the suggestions

Sorry for the Amero-centric answer. I thought you were from here and living somewhere else or something, I don't really follow much of the goings on. I fail at being a stalker.

In my experience the godparent has a closer role in the family, which means gifts on birthday/christmas etc. The godchild also reciprocates on those days with a token gift.

This varies by family and I should not have assumed you knew what we did.

that would be a very generous gift. and very practical.

Unfortunately, doesn't seem like you are in Chicago...but if your godson were one of those active types you could check out funsherpa. They have a range of fun activities that you can give as a 'gift'. I gave my nephew a skydiving gift and his parents almost killed me, but he really enjoyed it...at least I didn't waste my cash on a shirt he'd probably think was uncool!

well it's nice to see the spammers are kinda reading the posts these days. I removed the link cos dammit you have to be pretty dumb to spam a thread about a mod's godson, and not all that bright to suggest that a 10 month old Australian baby check out skydiving in Chicago. Jesus.

I wound up getting her savings bonds. I was at my parents last weekend and we went through all the ones that I still have from the early 80's, that are already fully mature and its not insignificant how much interest they have accrued.

You = cool godfather. She's already looking forward to socks and maybe a sweater for Christmas.
