I've had some friends try this and also watched it on TV. My friends said it worked, but they were probably plastered a few shots in. The TV proved it wrong. I think it was Mystery Busters or something.

The final verdict was that it helps, but that it's not gonna turn Viaka into Grey Goose.

That's an idiotic thing to say. Scotch evaporates from the barrels as it ages, and therefore, if you were to take 2 identical bottles of scotch and age them side by side for 10 years and 18 years, you would have scotch that had the flavours concentrated to different degrees. They are completely different. Whether older scotch is necessarily better can be a point of debate, but whether it is different is NOT.

There are of course many other factors at play as well, but if you can't understand this one there isn't a point inn going into the others.

Svedka Vodka isn't bad at all for the money. I'd rather drink Grey Goose, but it is almost twice as expensive.

I can also tell all of Diageo's Classic Malts (that is, scotch from exemplar whiskies from different regions) apart blind. But if anyone can't tell the differenece between, say, Talisker and Dalwhinnie, they should probably just stick to Banker's Club.

You're right, I should have said "most people". Hobbyists and connoisseurs aside, most people buying 18 year old scotch are impressed by the label and price tag and wouldn't know the difference if the liquor inside was replaced with Cutty Sark.

OH MY GOD Wild Turkey is just unbelievably bad. I mean holy shit, really? It tastes like 1/4 bourbon, 1/4 machine oil, and 2/4 acetone. WTF????

What do you suggest as a better tasting, same priced substitution?

Tito's isn't a bad choice, but different.
I don't think Svedka is bad either in it's price bracket.
