Security wouldn't let me into the store

Well, this should make for an interesting first post. I had a funny story happen to me today.

I was walking by an IWC store downtown today. Since I had some time to spare, I thought that I would walk in and look at a nice watch.

I walk up to the door, try to open it and find out that it's locked. Looking through the glass, I see a security guard eyeing me. He slowly gets up, opens the door, walks outside, closes the door behind him and stares at me. As he is doing this I notice that there is actually a door buzzer at the entrance with a label that reads something like this "Buzz to be let in".

"Can I help you?"
"Yes, I'd like to look at a Patek Philippe."
"Do you have an appointment?"
"Uhh... no."
The security guy slowly looks at me from head to toe.
"I'm sorry, I cannot let you in."

The whole episode was just so hilarious that I almost started laughing right after he said that. I was wearing a suit and a tie and was not expecting that at all.

So hehe, has this happened to anyone else on here?

Yup, pretty much the same scenario. I had seen cufflinks with a pricetag of about 300 euros in the window and wanted to ask for a pair a little cheaper. I was told they only had cufflinks 500 euros and up.

OKWAY.

Why were you looking for a Patek in an IWC store?

They had a Patek label on one of the windows. I assume this particular store has a partnership with them.

A suit doesn't mean jack. What brand of suit was it? Bespoke? You proably looked like a small timer. The funny thing is that the security guard probably got it right; there was no way you were actually interested in buying a Patek. Am I right?

Marketing. "Wow, they wouldn't let me in. Now I really want one!"

I had a similar experience at the Avi Rossini store in London. I walked in just to look at what kind of stuff they had, and was quickly told they didn't sell RTW and they were very busy today, so I'd have to leave.

I think you have to be both rich and from the middle east to shop there.

not sure if this is on a related note, but maybe, but i remember there was this one store of merchandise long ago, where everybody was in there looking around, but the manager stood up and exclaimed, "we will only be selling 20 items today" and then a rush of people started to go grab things and take it to the counter.
i later overheard on several occasions "that is fine, ma'am, we are over the limit already, but we will make an exception for you"

wow what a great way to market and sell, i thought.

We will have to see the suit in question.

It helps to look like you're annoyed, that you have money to burn, and that the security guard is less then dirt to you.

"I'd like to buy a watch, is that OK with you?" with a scowl on your face, will probably get you further then asking if you can please look at the Patek watches.

I'm 21. I don't have a fancy suit and, as I said, I simply wanted to look at a Patek.

I may not be able to afford to dress fashionably but I know how to make myself look stylish. This was just a novel experience and I thought it was funny.

Sidenote: Interesting how Avi Rossini doesn't have a website.

Well, there's your answer. Next time wear an SF-approved suit and shoes. A store in london was recently robbed of ~50mil by 3 men in suits. Maybe people are being paranoid right now.

I find London pretty good about that kind of stuff. I was killing some time with a buddy on Old Bond Street and we walked into the DeBeers store.

Thinking I was asking about some crappy ass pave I asked to see a few rings.

They were pretty liberal in handing them to us and letting us walk around the shop. I didnt realise that they were running between 8 and 17 thousand Pounds each.

This was pre-robbery though...

yeah one time my wife and i were looking at some rings and the lady at this jeweler (she was only one working there) never put back the a ring before she took out another ring.

at the end, she had a whole mess of rings out on the display and a couple on my wife's finger, and some left out on another section of the display, she was so disorganized and incoherent of the issues at hand, that either one of us could have easily taken a ring and run off.

fortunately for her we are very decent people.
