Sleep Deprivation due to work schedule

Thread Starter
I just started working full-time and given that I work in finance I have to be in the office by 6:45am and normally don't leave until 6:30pm. My commute is about an hour each way and I go to the gym 3 times during the work week (and once on the weekend). Typically I get to bed by 12:00 or a bit earlier, giving me 5 hours of sleep a night on the weekdays. My question is: is this enough? If not, how can I modify me schedule to get more rest?

its probably not enough and you should do your best to get more sleep. however, i averaged about 5-6 hours the last few years as a student and i know people who survived on less. sometimes you just can't get the sleep you need but you can try to ensure that the few hours you do slep are quality. i've found that when i meditate for the 10-15 minutes before sleeping, i wake up feeling better. placebo effect? possibly... but it couldn't hurt. sleep quality makes a difference. for example, 5 hours of good sleep >> 8 hours of sleep after a night of heavy drinking (f***ed up REM phase, etc.).

i certainly cannot do it; i once in awhile have to work over time for a period of a couple of weeks and the last time i had to do it, i went to work at 7am left at 6pm and my commute is about 1 hour each way and i try to get in at least 30 minutes workout (cardio) in every day. i go to bed around 11 but dont fall asleep till 12 thereabouts so i got about 5.5 hours a day for 2 weeks except weekends and i was completely exhausted.
im sure if i were 10 years younger i could have done it on a regular basis though.

I wouldn't be able to do that for three consecutive days much less as a normal schedule. That sounds awful. That being said, I believe this "8-hour rule" isn't absolute and there are a lot of people who can tolerate much less sleep than that (especially if you're smaller or skinnier). I would say just work out once during the work week instead of thrice, but then do it on saturday and sunday. This "weekend warrior is dangerous" rule only applies to old people. I'm so glad I choose to start my law career in a small town, city people live terrible lives!

It's better to stagger your workouts throughout the week though. Try excercising on a Wednesday - Friday - Sunday schedule, assuming you can sleep in on Saturday and work out earlier on Sunday. I really don't think a consistent 5 hrs / day is healthy for anyone except the rare genetic anomaly.

Not sure why you have to sleep at 12AM except for the gym schedule. You should be home by 7:30PM, have showered, cooked and finished eating by 9PM and have had time to unwind / check stocks / watch TV and be in bed by 10PM, giving you a good 7 hours of rest. If your happy hour or your girlfriend is keeping you up later you should really save it for the weekend for the good of your health.

Age and general physical condition have a lot to do with it.

How old are you and how do you feel?

When you're younger, 5-6 hour sleep is fine. Just make sure your nutrition is top notch (eat well, vitamins, fish oil, etc) and do try to get exercise in - anything you can. If you can walk to work for 30 minutes every morning, or run off for a run after work, do that.

wtf does fish oil do? i mix in 3 tablespoons of flax meal w/ my protein shake for the omega 3's, would it be pointless to take fish oil concurrently?

I would love five full hours a night. I typically get 3-4 hours a night on school nights.

there's so much to do in a day. i wish my body was wired so it can efficiently live off of only 4-5 hours of sleep per day.

isnt there a well-known, former football coach who only sleeps like 3 hours a night? he did this ever since he was young.

People are somewhat physiologically different. Scientists say it may be impossible to really do prolonged 2-3 hour sleep schedules and that the error is in self-reporting.

I think I can definitely maintain a 6 hour sleep schedule and it works fine for my energy levels. But then there are people I know who need 8 minimum.

Fish oils helps with skin, and helps prevent breakouts and keeps it looking fresh. Also, it assists in skin production (for hands, body) and nails.

I get the same amount every night...sleep 11pm, wake up 5am, 1 hour commute.

It's all about nutrition! Then again, I am lucky and don't gain a pound from drinking/sleep deprivation/over-eating.
