Fountain Pens at Work?

I work at an accounting firm and just about everybody uses a ball point...would it be a bad idea to use a fountain pen? I prefer to write with them but the ink really is not a friendly liquid. If you write on crappy paper it will smudge and it is very difficult to get off skin.

Any professionals on the forum that use a fountain pen at work?

As nice as they are, they look affected.

I always use a fountain pen. But then I'm in an IT-related job so it's mainly just notes and stuff for my own purposes. I wouldn't say it's affected, I'm not the only one in my department using one.

So here you are listing all the downsides, and the only positive going for using fountain pen is that you like it.

Don't use it, or just say fuck it and use it, but be prepared to deal with all your own listed downsides.

My fountain pen ink is just as easy to get off the skin as any other pen ink. It is Parker "Quink".

I use a fountain pen at work with no issues. I use them to take notes, provided you are not clumsy, ink should not be feared.

What kind of work are you in and what kind of pen are you writing with?...unfortunately for me all of my pens have a medium nib which is awfully thick to take notes with.

it is affected. i use one anyway.

I use a fountain pen at work daily, and never hesitate to use it in the highest level of meetings. I use a fine nib most often but also have a medium and an extra fine that I use on occasion. In my business circles, I tend not to be the only one writing with a fountain pen.

I can't remember the last time ink was on my fingers, but on the rare occasion that it happens, it wipes off easily.

I work in public relations and my usual go to pens are Parker 51s and a fine nibbed Pelikan Souvereigns (M400 to M800). I do have medium and broad nibbed pens including a really nice Omas in Saft Green Celluloid with a nice wet broad nib but I prefer them for personal correspondence.

A stiff nib would be more useful for work.

Indeed, the great American makers used to have a large assortment of stiff nibs for the use of accountants, secretaries and the like.

Okay well I will see how I feel using a Namiki Vanishing Point as it does not really look like a FP.

I find that I get ink on my fingers when I dip my pen in a half empty inkwell to draw up ink..but also if you drop your pen...which I have done before it makes a big mess (especially if you have Mont Blanc....those shatter).

Also I do not understand why everybody says the ink comes off easily...the only thing that kind of works for me is dishwasher detergent. I generally use Omas, Visconti, and Private Reserve ink and none of it comes easily off my skin like ball point or roller ball ink.

Yes I think you are right about the stiff nib...who makes a good stiff gold nib? I have a stiff gold nibbed Waterman but it writes like shit...but I do have a nice steel nibbed Aurora which I guess would work.

I have experience with the Aurora 14k gold nibs and they tend to be stiff and with some tooth and if you are used to a soft smooth write, it could be a bit of a culture shock. Modern Waterman nibs write like nails and don't do much for me. If you are looking for something office friendly, may I suggest the design icon the Lamy 2000 a great example from the mid 1960s modernist/International school. Mont Blancs are not writing instruments more jewelry IMHO are overpriced and too delicate. I do however own a Namiki/Pilot Vanishing Point and it's a really cool pen.

I work in Financial / Professional Services firm and use a Fountain Pen every day in my work for taking notes, both internally and at external meetings with clients etc. I'm the only person in my business circle that I know of that uses a fountain pen office and often get positive comments about it. It is a nice pen though, IMO (elegnat black body with gold nib). I also use an ink pot and draw ink into the pen using the syringe-thing, rather than using the disposable ink cartridges which can be a little messy but make me appreicate the pen and writing with it all the more. I give a big thumbs up to using a fountain pen.

Whenever possible, I use a fountain pen.

Of course, you also need to have FP-friendly paper, which most paper these days is not.
