Getting work calls on vacation

Why do people do this? It's not my job to help you out while I'm away from the office because you are unorganized. It's not a huge deal but on days like this, when I have stuff to do, it becomes a real pain in the ass to get a phone call or blackberry message every 10 mins. Figure it yourselves plz.

My dad owns a few companies, and as a kid he was ALWAYS getting business calls on vacation. Probably every day of every vacation I've ever been on with my parents he got at least one call that was business related. You'll never know how truly annoying it can get, until you are forced to leave a vacation half way through, because your Dad has to go back to the office.

I remember having to leave vacations early, having my Dad leave in the middle of them and come back a day or two later, or just canceling trips altogether a week or so before we were suppose to leave because my Dad couldn't get the time off.

I kind of like it. I would rather spend 30 minutes returning emails/phone calls, so I 1) dont stress about what I am missing, and 2) dont have to spend the first two days catching back up when I get back. By that same token however (and I work from home, so personal/work time gets blurred quite a bit), I use that to justify leaving 'early', working from parks/baseball games, and never officially taking a vacation day for a one day off kind of thing.

Well, I am not a kind of person who would pick up calls when I was in a vacation. The vacation is... a vacation. Maybe the vacation is the only time I can enjoy myself (and my money I have been making for a year). So if it is possible, I would throw the phone to the sea and buy new one after the vacation is over.

This. If I am bored and have my laptop on me I might check my emails, but you better believe if it's something more than a quick reply back, I'm not going to do it until I get back.

Having work contact me while on vacation has been part of my life for years. I had one senior VP that used to seem to make a point to bother me on vacation (I think he resented it when a direct report had time off). I figured out how to deal with this due to him bothering me. Any time I have a day off, if work contacts me 1-4 times, I charge 4 hours worked that day, 4 hour PTO. Five or more times, I charge as if I worked that day. Hard for the guy signing your time card to argue with that, when he was the one contacting you, and you mention Wage and Hour laws.

I still have that policy, but all my direct reports are good people, and actually try and protect me when I'm off, from being bothered by work. If one of them makes contact, I know it's important.

I prefer to go on vacation where cell phones don't have service.

Sometimes I get back and see the volume of missed calls, and all the panic emails and stuff and smile. The vacation served the purpose of getting me away.

Although, I do feel bad because sometimes my parents or my gf get calls, people think I've died, etc. People refuse to believe "no cell phone reception" means no cell phone reception.

Yup. I'm scheduled to head to a part of Mexico with no cell coverage in October. That was part of the reason I picked the spot

Of course, the vacation is scheduled...doesn't mean work will allow me to take it
