Makes sense. Anyway, Bangladeshis aren't really known as arbiters of style.

Didn't some European royal figure cut his tie off several decades back in public with scissors because he felt they were silly?

I lived there for a couple of years and tbh it makes sense given the stuffiness and heat of the typical Bengali office.

A good excuse to wear those new John Lobb sandals.

It's no loss. In a country like Bangladesh, the heat makes dressing up inconvenient. Suits and ties are not a symbol of being well-dressed their, it's just a foreign thing that was imported into the country during colonialism. Japan also instituted a similar "Cool Biz" program to get people to dress down in the summer to reduce the need for AC and reduce carbon emissions. It makes perfect sense.

I suppose they can proceed to arrest the unknowing foreign ministers who visit.

The news about Bangladesh has been misinterpreted. The ban on suits and ties are only for government officials during the hot and humid summer months. It is not for everybody. And if you want to know how Bangladeshi people not in government service dress, visit www.kingofdhaka.com for a sample.

It is also recommended by our municipal government that public servants and affliated staff should wear short sleeve cloths instead of suit and ties in summer to save energy.
