I grew up in the south. Just saw AF's new avatar and knew this had to be done.

Best right hand in the biz:

Jerry Douglas at Merlefest:

And a very early Flecktones tune (Newgrass??):

I know there's nothing less exciting than someone else's local music, but I used to go to these guys' shows when they were in town (often). Was in a band and opened for them in Carrboro, NC a long time ago.

Great thread - I love Gillian Welch, Son Volt, Steve Earle's The Mountain LP and some other modern takes on bluegrass. Also some classic old 1930s miners' protest songs.

Ola Belle Reed, FTW! Hazel Dickens, too....

If anyone's seen Harlan County USA, Nimrod Workman (the ancient black lung guy who does the acapella 'O Death)' has a record(s?), that while not technically bluegrass, nicley compliments the genre. I think he sang Amzing Grace in the funeral scene in Coal Miner's Daughter...

Then you've got the 'Brothers': Monroe, Stanley, Delmore, Louvin....

i grew up in the mountains of VA so this is right up my alley. i just saw elvis costello and he has a new bluegrass/country project with jerry douglas. it's awesome. they played a bunch of old standards, some reworked costello shit, some grateful dead...it was all over the place. pretty sure there's an album out.

Coal Mining Women is one of my favorite albums.

Also mention-worthy is Hazeldine, Texas Rubies, Del McCourrey and maybe Buddy & Julie Miller.

+1! On a related note, are you familiar with the band Ollabelle? They are great.

Jerry Douglas and the rest of Alison Krauss and Union Station are favorites. Rounder record label does this music very well. Get the SACDs of Union Station if you want to be amazed.

The first vid had some very impressive non-picking guitar playing.

If you pick it, it'll never heal.

Any fans of newer stuff, like Yonder Mountain String Band?

Dunno if you're familiar but Jay Farrar had another project called Gob Iron that's worth a listen if you're a Son Volt fan. a little more "earthy" but still great.

I got the Ollabelle record (Riverside battles?), and played it once . A little too AF for me, but I will eventually give it another listen.

Check out the Demolition String Band - Ola Belle's nephew(? Zane Campbell) was a member at one point, I think...
