Recommend hotels to stay in South Beach, Fort Lauderdale

Work is sending me on a cruise in late November for the inaugural cruise on one of the new ships, and I am going to stay 3 nights prior in Miami, and 2 nights after in Fort Lauderdale.

Any recommendations on hotels that are well located and relatively inexpensive (prefer $120/nt USD tops)?

Don't need to be super fancy, but not really wanting something like a motel either. Something around 3-star is fine.

Thanks!

$120/night in November limits things a bit.

Anything right on Ocean Drive in that price range is going to feel like a motel, although they are motels. They are all fine to stay in (but don't stay at the Clevelander unless you really like wet t-shirt contests and the noise associated with them) but are nothing fancy. They are places to sleep and keep your stuff while you are out on the beach. That's the main beach street. From 1st street to 13th on Ocean Drive. The Colony is famous for it's facade & neon. The rooms are nothing great. But in your price range.

The main restaurant street is Lincoln Road. It runs east/west at about 17th street - and has no car traffic. There are no hotels right on this road, but there are TONS of restaurants. The Ritz and the Delano (dress up and visit the bar there some night) are at 18th and Lincoln. Those are out of your price range. It looks like there is a new place, the Riviera South Beach that has special initial rates. It'll be quieter at that location than it is down on Ocean. Ocean Drive is now LOTS of people walking on the sidewalk, traffic and noise. It is no longer the "european" calm and charm that lured Mr. Versace to live there. The cool house is still there, but man the crowds that have flocked in are not what used to be there.

I would look into the Marriott on Fort lauderdale beach. Marriott beach place towers. It is located where there is some entertainment (Whiskey blue, Lulu's etc.) I have never stayed there so I cannot vouch for it.

Can't help on south beach, but the Delano and Ritz are nice, so I would look in the vicinity.

edit:
Something you might consider, since I read fredfred after I posted and he indicates that you might have some trouble in near the Delano, is the marriott biscayne bay. It is right across from south beach and the cab ride across the ventian causeway wouldn't be bad. I knew someone in that area at one time and we used to make a similar trip across the macarthur.

Thanks! For Miami, through trip advisor I found a few "highest rated/most popular" ones in my price range and came up with: Essex Hotel Indian Creek Hotel Cadet Hotel The Park Central Any of those anybody familiar with?

Indian creek is a few too many blocks north

Essex is in the middle of the action, but a block off the beach (which might be a good thing). If I recall correctly it has a cool patio area with a bar.

Cadet is scary.

Park Central is near the colony. One of the "motel-ish" hotels. Fine enough. 6th and Ocean is the center of the action.

Essex or Park central.

(I rent a condo in March for a month and stay down there. Walk all over the place. That's how I know)

Nope. But I did find this site gave better rates:

http://www.travelhero.com/hotelhero.cfm

for the Essex, which doesn't look bad.

Just remembered that the Ft Lauderdale 2-night stay will be covered by the company, so the budget there can be a bit higher ($200 tops?) Thanks a lot Fredfred, personal experience is always the best, compared to user reviews online I find. The Essex looks cool, since you can also use the amenities at the Cleavlander. Can you explain a bit how the Cadet is scary? TripAdvisor has consistently good reviews for them.

The Yankee Clipper -- I believe it's a Marriott or something. Pretty much the most popular beachfront hotel in Fort Lauderdale off A1A. I used to go to high school 5 minutes from Fort Lauderdale beach. It was sweet. Make sure to check out The Elbow Room when you are there.

I am going to have to respectfully disagree with the YC. That looks like a place to take a family, and there is no nightlife around it. He would have to cab/drive everywhere.

OP, you should remember you will have to pay for parking also. If it is not covered figure 20/night.

^Thanks. I am going with the GF, so not really going to go crazy in terms of partying and stuff at night. I'll be cabbing everywhere anyways, so parking is not an issue.

this is kind of ironic because I actually just started working for starwood hotels about a month ago. I work at the Westin here in Jersey City, NJ and I had my friend stay at the Sheraton Suites Cypress Creek in Ft. Lauderdale. She thought that it was nice. http://www.starwoodhotels.com/sherat...ropertyID=1113
