They can be virtuosos on popular instruments, but are relatively unknown, or can be well known virtuosos in their own circle, but relatively unknown due to the non-mainstream nature of their chosen instrument. I will start with Ashley MacIssac, premier Cape Breton fiddler: One final caveat: you have to have seen the performer live.

Billy Childs. Swings real hard but no one seems to know much about him. Saw him in Syracuse a few years ago.

Do click the youtubes I posted though. He's gone a bit insane, as so many musical geniuses seem to, but he's incredible.
