The prices are very good (the savings are quite substantial) and the watches look to be very good quality for the money.

What are your thoughts?

Re: the Movado watch :

I know one person who owns a Movado but I've never really thought Movados are really great watches. What does everyone here think about Movados? How is the quality, style, etc.?

Thanks.

I own an Invicta divers watch and it has held up quite well over the years. For a "cheap" watch I think Invicta presents interesting options and a good value.

I'll give you an opinion. They're all hideous!

Don't buy any of them and use the money for one good looking watch.

Are you considering purchasing all of these watches? If so, don't. Take that money you were going to put into a bunch of mediocre quality watches, and put it into a higher quality watch. Those watches are crap.

I really like #2, #4, and #5. My personal favourite is the Seiko (#2) by far.

I have a few Seikos. I love Seikos.

. . . but what does the forum consider to be a good quality watch and how much should I be spending on such a watch?

I'm new to the forum, but personally I don't like any of those watches. The two Invictas are pretty sad "homages" to Chopard and Omega, respectively, the Sturling is, I believe, an "homage" to Baume and Mercier which is itself an "homage" to Omega, and the Seiko is an "homage" to Breguet. The only original design in the bunch is the Movado, and it's not a winner in my book. The quality of all except the Seiko and the Movado is pretty poor, and those two aren't anything to write home about. If it were me, I'd take the $750 for those five, plus whatever else you can scrounge up, and put it toward one semi-decent budget watch. Take a look at an automatic Oris, Stowa, Nomos, Archimede, Hamilton, or one of the men's watches here: http://www.robertlighton.com/thewatches.html. At least with these brands you'll get a quality watch.

A good starter watch would be a Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic or a Seiko Spirit Automatic.

Here are a few recommendations to keep in mind:

Sapphire Crystal
Automatic or mechanical movement-high quality Japanese or Swiss
Keep it simple and elegant. This will give you a watch that is versatile.

If you consider watches with these three features, you will be looking mostly at good quality.

Good luck, and let us know what you choose.

If you're to insist on a gold watch, perhaps you'll look for something a little more classic in a rose gold. All of the watches you have list are horrendous From your apparent budget you cannot go for the below, but Stowa have some wonderful entry level watches. http://www.german-watches.com/cgi-bi...howrub--marine

None of the watches in the first post appeal to me. I also don't think they are good value. First of all no quartz watch is worth more than any Timex or Casio from Walmart. Secondly if you are over the age of 25 you should get an automatic. Check into Seiko or Orient automatics.

Hamilton makes a rose gold automatic for less than 1000.

Those are sooooooooooo ugly.

Movado -- that's a VERY dated look. It screams "1970's" to me. (Yes, I know that the design dates back to the 1940's.)

As for the others, I just have no interest in wearing an $80 piece-of-crap watch (eg, those Invictas). Nor do I have any interest in wearing a quartz watch for other than athletic or very active use (like wearing my G-Shock for hiking).

Hamilton, Seiko, Stowa, those are three good recommendations. Check out "watchuseek" forums for deals on used watches, I bought a Ball Fireman 40mm there, and I'm very pleased with the results. Stowas come up for sale on a regular basis.
