Why did ancient warriors workout?

I was thinking about the other thread "Why do you workout?"

For a lot of people it's to do with vanity. It made me wonder, in ancient times did people workout for vanity, to pull women or survival?

The practiced and kept in shape. In classical culture, especially Greece, it was actually considered immoral to be fat. There were those who trained for strength, but in general it was all around practice with your peers = wrestling, running, archery, etc. There was also the whole divide between the citizens - the hoplite farmers vs the mounted (sometimes) nobles vs. the cowardly lower classes with their slings and bows All trained accordingly.
