Is there any negotiating to be done with Lowe's on a washer and dryer?

We're finally going to pull the trigger on a front load washer and steam dryer. Is there any chance of negotiating with a large chain store like Lowe's or is that an exercise in futility?

Thanks, H_S.

You might be able to get a little off in my experience. They discounted a Whirlpool for me once but I think it is unusual.

I got a 10% off Lowe's coupon when I changed my address online. You might want to take a look at that option, or check out your local post office for a change of address kit. If you still can't get one, have a look at eBay. You can get a 10% off coupon for just a couple of bucks.

they have 20% off Energy Star appliances + free delivery for Labor Day sale. That's pretty damn good, I bought a fridge/dishwasher/range from them last night. It's my first big purchase with them and they have been awesome to deal with.

There should be a contractor appliance supply in your area that will most likely have better prices than Lowe's to start with and be more likely to haggle - free delivery/install, etc..

Lowe's will definitely haggle. Ask one of the guys with the blue vests that appear to do nothing but run & hide from customers --apparently, they work there. Also, you can go to the contractor's desk and talk to one of those guys, they usually are ready to work something out.

Embrace the price match. Find the items you want in one of their competitors ads and bring it in. They'll match it for you on the spot. Sears, Best Buy, Home Depot, etc. Not just pricing for individual items but general sales like the 20% they're running now. Same goes for their competitors. You can bring in the Lowes ad to Best Buy and get them to PM the sale.

Where do you live? Sears has three appliance outlets in South Florida. Some of the items are returns that have been repaired, but many are brand new. Every few weeks Sears runs a sale on washers or dryers - washers one week, dryers a few weeks later - from 20% to 30% off the discounted price.

You can find the Sears outlet closest to you at their website.

Typically the X% off promotional deals are driven by the manufacturers, so that the retailer doesn't take a margin hit.

I'm surprised that they negotiate on appliances, but if you're buying a suite of them, instead of just one, I can sorta see that.

Absolutely, paying retail for stuff not on sale is for small timers. Lowes even accepts coupons from competitors, as does Home Depot, just as Rambo said. I was going to buy my stuff from Sears because stuff is always on sale, they have a huge inventory in the catalog, can you get a discount for signing up with their store account. If you really want a good deal, try the two online giants ajmadison.com and abt.com and start a bidding war between them.

I agree with going to the contractors area. They seemed eager to discount the last time I was doing a place. Didn't seem to matter that I didn't have a license or anything. That was Home Depot.

Since appliance sales are in the dumps you may give it a shot. Try to find a cheaper price for the product online or some other store and see if they would price match.
