nailbiting - Page 2

Good luck, Alter. Look forward to hearing how you get on. I haven't gone down that "9 minute video" route (like you, I'm very dubious!). I'm going to try "will power". Let's compare notes in 6 weeks time! Cheers

You can finger-bang chicks much better if you bite your nails.

So, two years after starting this thread. I came home from a business trip and my son, now 9, announced that he had stopped biting his nails two days previously and intended to stop completely. I was thrilled but wasn't sure if he could control himself. It has been two months now and the joy he gets from trimming his own nails with clippers, something he had never needed to do before, is fantastic. Proud dad.

Speaking from past experiences, the anti-nail biting polishes and cream don't work particularly well. They could solve the problem - but in most cases they won't. That said, there is no harm in trying it.

I was a SEVERE nail-biter my whole life, up until about 3 months ago. On a whim I tried a hypnosis program - and after that the urge went down about 90%. Hypnotherapy, in my opinion, is far and away the best solution. Would it work for a 7-year old? I believe so, in fact he may enjoy it. FYI many children do outgrow their nail-biting tendencies, but a fair portion won't (and I certainly didn't).

This is the Hypnosis program that I used. Easily the best $10 I ever spent:

I've also found keeping a rubber band on my wrist & snapping it every time I have the urge to bit serves as a nice reminder. Hypnosis in conjunction with a rubber band & non-bite cream or polish is almost fool-proof.

Edit: Just noticed this was an older thread w/ an update. Good for your son! That is so awesome to hear.

If he ever falls off the wagon later in life (and there is a chance he might, considering boredom/ stress/ loneliness etc. are common nail-biting triggers), I would still holly recommend hypnosis as a means to not only treat the problem but also heal it at the root.

Best of luck to him!!

Ha! Well, he's not yet a teenager, plenty of time for him to fail at something else.
