I thought prewashed jeans became popular because people wanted to get a true fit straight from the store instead of gambling with shrink-to-fit jeans that sometimes shrunk too much or too little.

all denim will stretch no matter how dense the weave or how much it has been treated/washed. it is the nature of woven cotton.

Close enough. The idea was that they wouldn't change too drastically.

Except they will, unless you wash them frequently.
