Are you really a magician?

Color me dumb.

Magician - do you know Rob Zabrecky? I'm acquainted with him (though haven't seen him for years) and I've seen him perform a few times at parties, though never at the Castle.

Haha. Yeah, I was wondering whet it would come up again. I am indeed a professional magician and have been since I was about 16. I perform weekly for Clyde's Group (A prominent DC group of restaurants) and work at various private events. I perform a mix of sleight-of-hand and mindreading, but am leaning more towards the mindreading/hypnosis end of the spectrum. I have had a truly love/hate relationship with magic over the years but am getting back in to it in a big way - it is a fascinating and complex art - often trivialized (often deservedly so) but can be just as resonant and beautiful as any other dramatic art. I performed some at Denimbar and will be performing for the grand opening of Farinelli's. If you want to ask someone objective about my magic - Mauro (or CLDPSU) is your guy. (No I do not perform for children or have a bunny rabbit. Do not ask me these things)

I'm afraid not. I'm more part of the east coast magic clique and don't have too many west coast connections. Despite having met some wonderful people through magic - the most frustrating thing about the art for me is often other magicians and I remain somewhat suspicious of the larger magic scene. (not to disparage your friend at all)

I thought you might know him or know of him because of his rocker background. He was the singer in Possum Dixon, and I believe he did or does two-man show with David Lovering from the Pixies.

That sounds very cool. I'll have to look him up.

I think The Magic Castle's a fun place to hang out even if you don't see any magic there at all. There's plenty to do there with all the bars that are there, not to mention the "ghost" piano player. On busy nights, you might not even be able to see the big show without having had dinner reservations, anyway. And, although I'm a non-magician, I can attest to the differences in levels of magic ability, showmanship, and professionalism between some of the performers there. But on the whole, I've had fun watching the shows.

Note that his status is "Banned". So he has been banished (or "vanished", if this is a magic thread).

Maybe he did a bit too much promoting.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread, but does anyone know how to score an invite to Magic Castle? I would love to surprise a special someone if I only knew how...

It's fairly simple.

You can either stay at one of their hotels or you can email one of the magicians performing that night and conjure up some story about how you want to see them but don't know anyone with a guest card.

Or even post something on craigslist. I'm sure there are plenty of hungry magicians who'd be happy to deal with you.

Emailed one of the magicians performing. Except I was quite truthful about my reasons. I hope that works!

Just watched this after reading the thread. Entertaining, if somewhat predictable.

SHADE - as a poker player was difficult to watch (some obvious rules issues, like not playing table stakes).

For gambling sleights, are any of the magicians posting in this thread familiar with Darwin Ortiz? I would love to see him live... used to do some card stuff (hobby, and never great at it), and he was my absolute hero.
