I'm ambivalent. Didn't have a problem with Andy Garcia in Godfather III and definitely no problem with the straight actresses in The L Word

memoirs wasn't written by a japanese author, nor the film funded or directed by the japanese either, so i reckon it's a bit odd to moan that it had no japanese female leads (imho the book was fairly average). don cheadle isn't rwandan (nor is sophie okenedo for that matter) but that film was all good. ziyi zhang and gong li are both super fly though...i think they are both in 2046 by wong kar wai - one of the most arrestingy beautiful films (from a visual perspective) you are ever likely to see. at least i think gong li's in it. sorry if off topic.

(edited.....ahhh i can't spell for shot)

For me it's specifically a thing about Chinese actresses playing Japanese.

Having spent a significant fraction of my life in Japan speaking Japanese and with Japanese girlfriends, the language, accent, and body language of a Chinese playing a Japanese is completely off. It's like having an itch I can't scratch.
